I had been making quilts, that's for sure - it's part of life for me, a big part. And in the midst of all the chaos in the world, creativity that is also productive seems more important than ever.<br />
<br />
So the first quilt I was very keenly using up scraps with a Bonnie Hunter pattern, one she made when she was experiencing what she felt was like the plague back in 2019. It seemed appropriate to me in 2020.<br />
It's a Courthouse steps, but the strips are various sizes. I had fun with the quilting on it too.<br />

<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm6uzqvM4QDXOMlUBg2zb1zP-vXIrKbGTmmolEr6QpzYnx_bNS1b6uVC2EYjqiZtIHL_PvF1OSU-FJ3tovbtXc6PEHQd7PDZsDrMm04_u3rnmeOgf0y8N8yT9pUcE-nnj-MVv13R4Ojco/s1600/IMG_20200508_165219068.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm6uzqvM4QDXOMlUBg2zb1zP-vXIrKbGTmmolEr6QpzYnx_bNS1b6uVC2EYjqiZtIHL_PvF1OSU-FJ3tovbtXc6PEHQd7PDZsDrMm04_u3rnmeOgf0y8N8yT9pUcE-nnj-MVv13R4Ojco/s640/IMG_20200508_165219068.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Here's a closer up of the quilting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJdWHTp7exys34jcXeyxpSOw0OQcYKsYPmuVw_4Yn-5UpVxi9lDmcJUtj6-e8wpzkl0jVKDLOpkyuZeydToEs2HaBfKj4WJVyPDKeV6wMDRME5k9-0E1WrPYPV0PIJNMAdYZghGPmcgg/s1600/IMG_20200508_165105976.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJdWHTp7exys34jcXeyxpSOw0OQcYKsYPmuVw_4Yn-5UpVxi9lDmcJUtj6-e8wpzkl0jVKDLOpkyuZeydToEs2HaBfKj4WJVyPDKeV6wMDRME5k9-0E1WrPYPV0PIJNMAdYZghGPmcgg/s640/IMG_20200508_165105976.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
And for the backing, I used a piece from Ikea that seemed to work well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5wV9OJ8gHS_BwHFon0d3na4BLik8oOcZi95Eiy1eRcXWOeYwuybBGET9-9ycs2_lUKZ60_2unIgQDjKtZaYQzw3xXi3-3h44DCWJNEhpXSt_avj3alrKYAjWH9YSirvXhrezURf1EaGc/s1600/IMG_20200409_153839308.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5wV9OJ8gHS_BwHFon0d3na4BLik8oOcZi95Eiy1eRcXWOeYwuybBGET9-9ycs2_lUKZ60_2unIgQDjKtZaYQzw3xXi3-3h44DCWJNEhpXSt_avj3alrKYAjWH9YSirvXhrezURf1EaGc/s640/IMG_20200409_153839308.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I'm calling this Pandora, as once I opened up my scrap box, all sorts came out and went into this quilt. It's one I'm keeping for myself.<br />
<br />
The next one was one for an expected grand baby of a friend. I also wanted to take the opportunity to try a new free- motion pattern before using on another quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzdpns-N-CmUaUPXB4BYbsRrmRk7rTILKQXIoN6YFdPTb2fST22VOiXyAAY7oVaekW4czW-bN_wiRZy4wXfDJ5DHBzt2Rb7OMylIHudvWS0PIURNC9uL-W3WKSauS4ec0t4eR3WM0ppNc/s1600/IMG_20200526_083221993.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzdpns-N-CmUaUPXB4BYbsRrmRk7rTILKQXIoN6YFdPTb2fST22VOiXyAAY7oVaekW4czW-bN_wiRZy4wXfDJ5DHBzt2Rb7OMylIHudvWS0PIURNC9uL-W3WKSauS4ec0t4eR3WM0ppNc/s640/IMG_20200526_083221993.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern I was trying for the first time is in the white sections. I always doodle on paper first of all, but like to practise on small areas, often a placemats or similar, before using it on a quilt. I was pretty happy with how this went.</div>
<br />
The backing, not quite enough of one fabric, so the pieced cross shape worked well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfy0LH-XVzRKd4eRlz8hyphenhyphenWEH5BEr3L_sgN1li4DBSYVUD3L8czxgReT1F_hH4anVnQigk35DSFK6o8SfUetlMCFih5MegPevm5Sg3Fc06BiFXZsvK0CVKyrmgm2qEzczm00YWQWh-LcX0/s1600/IMG_20200526_083315190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfy0LH-XVzRKd4eRlz8hyphenhyphenWEH5BEr3L_sgN1li4DBSYVUD3L8czxgReT1F_hH4anVnQigk35DSFK6o8SfUetlMCFih5MegPevm5Sg3Fc06BiFXZsvK0CVKyrmgm2qEzczm00YWQWh-LcX0/s640/IMG_20200526_083315190.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
And so to my third quilt, one I'd been working on for a couple of months using autumnal colouring. My other half really likes autumnal tones and so to mark our 40th wedding anniversary I made this quilt. Nothing purchased for this, all pieces I had on hand.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoeEt-Z1RAoYG1QS1EpWasln74Xkl41Ne-xx-L_zFJiPnZxwTI1kspq14mCrgGLSuAasBeyNIrezTJ2HVjsJlwD4Nb_Qy8c5W_4laa-PV6K1nxB39SuoN9T-lZ206y21WnFFw5qMAjjJc/s1600/IMG_20200610_151024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1187" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoeEt-Z1RAoYG1QS1EpWasln74Xkl41Ne-xx-L_zFJiPnZxwTI1kspq14mCrgGLSuAasBeyNIrezTJ2HVjsJlwD4Nb_Qy8c5W_4laa-PV6K1nxB39SuoN9T-lZ206y21WnFFw5qMAjjJc/s640/IMG_20200610_151024.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
And the backing, another half of a doona cover (100% cotton).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQG2G70p0xz7hr123hyhBfaPQnKXjjh51HIzSxYI2YG8TkI2czk70Qu_OrxH0nHVABtpbEUESbFyKLz9gCtcg40sTdvaoi51OX9EpNg7ItgcModQyFI0GCLOr_ISMRwD3HI8BG0g2llPc/s1600/IMG_20200610_151120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1187" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQG2G70p0xz7hr123hyhBfaPQnKXjjh51HIzSxYI2YG8TkI2czk70Qu_OrxH0nHVABtpbEUESbFyKLz9gCtcg40sTdvaoi51OX9EpNg7ItgcModQyFI0GCLOr_ISMRwD3HI8BG0g2llPc/s640/IMG_20200610_151120.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Very pleased I got to practise the pattern before launching into this quilt. Happy with the result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So they're my finishes, until the next time,</div>

<br />
I've also appreciated t5time to sew small things. And since I enjoyed creating 5" finished blocks, I had another go at monkey wrench blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
It is made up of all kinds of bits and pieces of my scraps, so another win. And I knew i had some backing left from a doona cover a friend gave me from Ikea. It's so cute. But I also knew it wouldn't be quite enough. So I framed the centre and voila, a backing.<br />
<br />

I'm really pleased with how it turned out. And now it seems, since our son and daughter in law are still here (from Switzerland) with no set date for a return, this will be for their son, expected end August.<br />
<br />
Its very exciting, our first grandchild. And who knows, he may be born here and we'll get to see and hold him, rather than waiting a couple of months to do that.<br />
<br />
I have been working on several things (other people chasing squirrels, or various distractions?) And need to finish at least 3 in the near future.<br />
Until next time,<br />
Stay safe,<br />

I say fortunate in the light of all the implications of the pandemic virus sweeping the world.<br />
<br />
First of all our son from New Zealand arrived towards the end of February for 2 weeks. Then his brother and sister in law arrived from Switzerland. They were coming for a wedding which meant that subsequently we were all able to gather down south for a few days of family time.<br />
<br />
It was lovely going out for a couple of meals, walking along the beach and generally hanging out together.<br />
<br />
When our son and his wife (who had remained in N Z where her parents and sister came to visit) first settled in the South Island, they stayed with a lovely gentleman who, due to some mobility issues, has people stay, cook & clean in exchange for lodging and board.<br />
We also met the man when we visited last year. Since my son had wisely brought a large bag with him, I knew there was room for him to return with a quilt. I also knew that I had done this quilt last October, but it was not quite finished.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
It's a simple 16 patch with with what I think of as an egg timer block alternating. It gives the 16 patch a surrounded appearance. I quilted some large spineless feathers in the cream areas and some orange peel in the 16 patch. The tram lines in the final border just seemed to complete it. I added the binding and it was done!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the backing, I used some more of a doona cover I had picked up from a second hand shop, in excellent condition. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm pleased that a UFO is making its way to someone who will appreciate it. As for our son and his wife from Switzerland, they are staying put here down under till early April. Fortunately my son can work from ( our) home. Bonus for us, we get to spend more time with them. </div>

But when it comes to making blocks of them I'm quite pleased to see a 6.5" size come together quite quickly.<br />
I appliqued some hearts on a few, intending to sash them and make a small quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihrgAlp6qX4wkSWyo3V71kcuyEBDQx_dIMmzTD57WMI47Wx3mSNWwtesT_SjTJZSuU83kX2UZCXVEQzMeRDhTDSZTLXr-FgcdsllhN6oVO7IW2zFlZ5jc_isovchPeth7SnWlxPoAAmDk/s1600/IMG_20190321_120404534.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihrgAlp6qX4wkSWyo3V71kcuyEBDQx_dIMmzTD57WMI47Wx3mSNWwtesT_SjTJZSuU83kX2UZCXVEQzMeRDhTDSZTLXr-FgcdsllhN6oVO7IW2zFlZ5jc_isovchPeth7SnWlxPoAAmDk/s400/IMG_20190321_120404534.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But my young niece needed a librarybag and likes hearts, so I kept making squares until I had 18 and made this one for her:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My sister in law saw it and said she'd like one too. So what's a quilter to do, but use up more scraps. The straps this time darker, handles do get a lot of use, so darker colours don't show the dirt quite so much. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUiyVKcJ1oIuOx-XxfKSEtgd_FqH7RMnG00j3ycpCx-cvzRioK1PRC4FABeb-a4dDmSbrPwXhIZnIJXPYYpoITTdkKcgRBt-_CpTXh2KmnTmFOAokpjT0aXJdVEVP1QU8f2EMLaFl2xYA/s1600/IMG_20200206_205047684.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUiyVKcJ1oIuOx-XxfKSEtgd_FqH7RMnG00j3ycpCx-cvzRioK1PRC4FABeb-a4dDmSbrPwXhIZnIJXPYYpoITTdkKcgRBt-_CpTXh2KmnTmFOAokpjT0aXJdVEVP1QU8f2EMLaFl2xYA/s640/IMG_20200206_205047684.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I'm enjoying these, might have to check out my fabric for some favourites for myself. I think the bag I use the most for sewing bits and pieces may be showing some wear itself. I can't even remember when I made it.<br />
<br />
Scraps may be a plenty, but bags are a great way to use some up.<br />
<br />
Until next time,<br />

I surveyed my UFOs, or more correctly rather than unfinished, almost finished. Which made me wonder, when do you consider a quilt to be finished?<br />
Sure we can complete a flimsy (top only) but that's definitely not finished, right? But then I realised this quilt<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC3cJ3fW6CxFLdV2eyax25x9Sg4d3ogmUKkxcsRZ_mUixJ3h5_zm-Xat4CeSp9CdWzkG2xjg81kiWL2coRyUdZsupI9tXZs32rvV2_XDlXDQ2HlAcLQUfNBiMVRUCWcPdkTHeBQl1ovVY/s1600/IMG_20200202_074945724.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC3cJ3fW6CxFLdV2eyax25x9Sg4d3ogmUKkxcsRZ_mUixJ3h5_zm-Xat4CeSp9CdWzkG2xjg81kiWL2coRyUdZsupI9tXZs32rvV2_XDlXDQ2HlAcLQUfNBiMVRUCWcPdkTHeBQl1ovVY/s640/IMG_20200202_074945724.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Was all but done, except the binding. I had even cut the binding, but somehow in all the Christmas activity, making some mug rugs for friends, a quilt for the hospice where a friend works:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaeRFf9ZmuPoTSszgTD5yMuUcRRzG2ct-IQC41uRM9_LxiERXaD8rPsZh9wzFleeDxfxgThgqgYYHRD4MaJb7zbhyKGFUBx7oyO9nY7UK5GMG4SN1HrR5ohY4m_iDguE3dTp1_EtHof4c/s1600/IMG_20200118_140921700.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaeRFf9ZmuPoTSszgTD5yMuUcRRzG2ct-IQC41uRM9_LxiERXaD8rPsZh9wzFleeDxfxgThgqgYYHRD4MaJb7zbhyKGFUBx7oyO9nY7UK5GMG4SN1HrR5ohY4m_iDguE3dTp1_EtHof4c/s640/IMG_20200118_140921700.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
And even a library bag for my niece. My sister in law asked me to make it and since I had a few of these scrap blocks with applied hearts, I thought they'd work well.<br />
Then I realised I think I work better when there's a goal in mind, rather than just creating a quilt just for its own sake. I'd already made a few blocks, had even picked out some sashing, but hadn't completed it. But once I had a bag to complete, I finished the 18 blocks and here it is.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDT8fTZTnAfm4RFBFG9P6zxECpS2AVQi43LxqJ4MkwLYDXGbwqtdSpiuPo_129qHjmgaH7ZOSGf1SXSn4OJf9Ij5QGioN7VCr2UDZOZYCNR1Qp5AidBuMI6iA6j_tE4yw-MDymwh8s750/s1600/IMG_20200122_165022797.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDT8fTZTnAfm4RFBFG9P6zxECpS2AVQi43LxqJ4MkwLYDXGbwqtdSpiuPo_129qHjmgaH7ZOSGf1SXSn4OJf9Ij5QGioN7VCr2UDZOZYCNR1Qp5AidBuMI6iA6j_tE4yw-MDymwh8s750/s640/IMG_20200122_165022797.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I realised I didn't have a destination for this quilt, so even though it was quilted, it wasn't bound, nor did it have a label. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So when do you think a quilt is completed? Not when it's a flimsy, when it's quilted? Technically it is a quilt, but not really finished. For me it has to be bound AND the label on it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also realised I have 2 others in similar state, binding chosen but not yet attached. Their turn will come. Meanwhile I'm pleased to have this one completed, even the fiddly corners on that border fabric that I've had for years. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUcmAk7-XDpypvUt2m27cgPI60YI6BCZJGjOSc3ilvqyDMO5IyUQLHoWJWAHPoSrIcRcT7Q4G6N35P8hw_ae38tU27Tip4d1QK5a8DlcGgcoO5Yi50eqPWipC23fN0fn-7KVP8ZbKai_U/s1600/IMG_20200202_145432225_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUcmAk7-XDpypvUt2m27cgPI60YI6BCZJGjOSc3ilvqyDMO5IyUQLHoWJWAHPoSrIcRcT7Q4G6N35P8hw_ae38tU27Tip4d1QK5a8DlcGgcoO5Yi50eqPWipC23fN0fn-7KVP8ZbKai_U/s640/IMG_20200202_145432225_HDR.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The backing is a sheet I picked up from a second hand shop - I also used this on my niece's bag.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizsvlw71Qk1DMZSkogZy05ldmTaMecAGqKldoPDpU3A8hiFxgu5WtY6SaR6GN1WzT-gumdAgdXqDN20OMCXk3kYNEm6Q0isGPF3q5K7fwgUEjTiM4n7iD7rws8DNsi0tHTWwBrEpOHU38/s1600/IMG_20200202_145447306_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizsvlw71Qk1DMZSkogZy05ldmTaMecAGqKldoPDpU3A8hiFxgu5WtY6SaR6GN1WzT-gumdAgdXqDN20OMCXk3kYNEm6Q0isGPF3q5K7fwgUEjTiM4n7iD7rws8DNsi0tHTWwBrEpOHU38/s640/IMG_20200202_145447306_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So I'd best find destinations for the other quilts, motivation to complete them.<br />
Until next time,<br />
LynnLynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802006440070002510noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4697161575740658362.post-71075412720059577812019-11-22T20:11:00.001+08:002019-11-22T20:11:24.824+08:00Tale of Two RunnersTable runners are my favourite 'go to' gift at the moment. They seem to be practical, fun to make, take what seems to be an appropriate amount of time and use lovely amounts of fabric - often scraps which I appreciate.<br />
<br />
My first was a pattern I'd been wanting to try for a while, commonly known as lozenges I think, though it's bound to have other names as it seems traditional blocks do that.<br />
<br />
I began with some fat eighths I'd bought a few months ago, coupled with a navy that I thought would help things 'pop'.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEdBnbRyCzrWJotrdAQMP99KSlwK7br_pSVAnFFT2l4-3NyFliOL0G2PuWfI7iTwwcIqu_zJtSvNH28_D13wuMJIHe7N80YkDOuWVtbGhkV9JlzdvmDb0n2wIV6XBXH8pZwB1uMCsjMsU/s1600/IMG_20191110_073004145.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEdBnbRyCzrWJotrdAQMP99KSlwK7br_pSVAnFFT2l4-3NyFliOL0G2PuWfI7iTwwcIqu_zJtSvNH28_D13wuMJIHe7N80YkDOuWVtbGhkV9JlzdvmDb0n2wIV6XBXH8pZwB1uMCsjMsU/s640/IMG_20191110_073004145.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I really enjoyed adding the apricots and greens, and then added the white with the circles - a leftover from a baby quilt that seemed to fit. Don't you just smile at the serendipitous nature of patchworking? I do.<br />
I then had fun doing some spineless feathers on the colours, just stitching in the ditch around the navy.<br />
<br />
But as I had made the corners of the lozenges, I had cut off the two and half inch triangles. I hate to waste such pieces, but rather than put them aside (I have too many of those already!) I decided to try to use them straight away.<br />
<br />
So I began with 'windmills' - again, probably not the correct block name, but at least a recognisable shape.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiJ9ISgc4mz-TtxT-nlEB00FtODDuLcg3FEWw3ndNMZLXoDIZFidXIS8-iXtOLS5tlaT4PB-uphvJEl-zv6L6U3-ktNTffN7YQ1ytQXkcgRLgx9O5unlDqBMWMbyn337trAP4knRYf1hk/s1600/IMG_20191122_194828955.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="344" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiJ9ISgc4mz-TtxT-nlEB00FtODDuLcg3FEWw3ndNMZLXoDIZFidXIS8-iXtOLS5tlaT4PB-uphvJEl-zv6L6U3-ktNTffN7YQ1ytQXkcgRLgx9O5unlDqBMWMbyn337trAP4knRYf1hk/s640/IMG_20191122_194828955.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I added sashing and some set in triangles and so a second table runner was created. Same fabrics, completely different design - I like the whimsy of that. Again, I used some of the fat eighths - hence the four corners being in the beige that co-ordinates with the green, white and beige floral, as I didn't have sufficient for the corners too.<br />
<br />
Here's a close up of the quilting around the blocks - some stipple and some loops.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIxD2z6Plw9ijfTUdRvRAysdXLXe8wSm7HxW-NMXafGO-PgQdzO72I2MK2EFJdg4fCXmOUt0FiEF8HtQ7f4sWlVZt3jcrBA3zq4mMurNMJjvy5Nwk9kR77O3hDM9jKUVfEkU5bs6faa6I/s1600/IMG_20191122_194855800.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIxD2z6Plw9ijfTUdRvRAysdXLXe8wSm7HxW-NMXafGO-PgQdzO72I2MK2EFJdg4fCXmOUt0FiEF8HtQ7f4sWlVZt3jcrBA3zq4mMurNMJjvy5Nwk9kR77O3hDM9jKUVfEkU5bs6faa6I/s640/IMG_20191122_194855800.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
And so, I have 2 gifts ready for friends, which is just as well as its birthday season for some of my friends.<br />
<br />
Until next time,<br />

I cut out some 3.5" squares so that I had the beginnings of a quilt ready to sew as I was heading to New Zealand to visit my son and daughter in law.<br />
<br />
The scenery was amazing. This was as I was walking from their place to the closest town, a 30 minute walk.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Below the beautiful lake Wanaka in the South Island. A gorgeous part of the world. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKUbT-GREmvjsjZNQaJeA8Nx2BK7jTHNkfNoGUvGNPelW9IgQp1V1lVPEkyv0Rey97mc7nxabFjRYx8ac8WtsN-2EX7SnatmP8cIFVBKf1P5jZlpi4mOg2CYDkQECDBG_ZBOO2X8l37Yw/s1600/IMG_20190915_111435157.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="506" data-original-width="1600" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKUbT-GREmvjsjZNQaJeA8Nx2BK7jTHNkfNoGUvGNPelW9IgQp1V1lVPEkyv0Rey97mc7nxabFjRYx8ac8WtsN-2EX7SnatmP8cIFVBKf1P5jZlpi4mOg2CYDkQECDBG_ZBOO2X8l37Yw/s640/IMG_20190915_111435157.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While my son was at work, I borrowed my daughter in law's sewing machine and began putting the pieces together to make the blocks below. That one is still to be quilted, but is a flimsy now and is next in line. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFPDtUg9RH3AXBBVVryLgoB5hZR0Zi8jsunrzI9RRMq0315Vvte-HIOK3R0e8cmyvCBQLgj6DX9q0fE_5wh8nEft0YQVwY-PnaHoYJSAl9pxV4qVsXRHKUGq2R7C7lMsFJHYVDi7NvEZk/s1600/IMG_20190922_105743586.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFPDtUg9RH3AXBBVVryLgoB5hZR0Zi8jsunrzI9RRMq0315Vvte-HIOK3R0e8cmyvCBQLgj6DX9q0fE_5wh8nEft0YQVwY-PnaHoYJSAl9pxV4qVsXRHKUGq2R7C7lMsFJHYVDi7NvEZk/s320/IMG_20190922_105743586.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On my return though, I sandwiched and began quilting these cute monkey wrench blocks (from Bonnie Hunter's free pattern <a href="https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2011/02/little-monkey.html">here</a>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxBIrLHuXzQSvemA6wVk1Sw7fIetnQOdbY4XDBzxwShUYD05zg154bFdfqDSBQD4HlxtHfdn5a8u6k_JR7-XljuywouY7YHDuDbowhzpElVPyHmhWwDHgOCJLU_ZsZypvsJ27ewqcEFZo/s1600/IMG_20191005_084936503_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxBIrLHuXzQSvemA6wVk1Sw7fIetnQOdbY4XDBzxwShUYD05zg154bFdfqDSBQD4HlxtHfdn5a8u6k_JR7-XljuywouY7YHDuDbowhzpElVPyHmhWwDHgOCJLU_ZsZypvsJ27ewqcEFZo/s640/IMG_20191005_084936503_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As is often the case, you keep a fabric for long enough and it comes in just right. The batik for the border was just that fabric. I really enjoyed putting the blocks together using small scraps and co-ordinating the colours. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the backing, my mother in law had passed on this butterfly fabric that worked well. I also had fun free-motion quilting the flowers as an overall pattern. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqlUGoIuqAXycoyJZciSc2pFgawdCcmOH-_-YcPk5jOrv9-pytDP474g7czsjG-1Ujizesbm3dyhOZotaSuwpT6YJnarfrc_IP4ODRnuyJHBBZf_NPqQ-Drq2klOXcA9mDEQrEhO0jpbI/s1600/IMG_20191005_084954640.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqlUGoIuqAXycoyJZciSc2pFgawdCcmOH-_-YcPk5jOrv9-pytDP474g7czsjG-1Ujizesbm3dyhOZotaSuwpT6YJnarfrc_IP4ODRnuyJHBBZf_NPqQ-Drq2klOXcA9mDEQrEhO0jpbI/s640/IMG_20191005_084954640.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This has now been passed on to a friend whose daughter is expecting her first baby. So my friend will be a new grandma! How exciting is that for her. I find such pleasure in creating and then being able to pass quilts on to people where I know they will be appreciated, used and bring joy. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It feels like time passes at different rates at times, though we know that it actually stays the same, there are still 24 hours in the day, the same number of days in the week and so on. And yet, its been two months since I last blogged. Admittedly I have been overseas to visit a son and daughter in law and also been down to our holiday place for a couple of weeks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But I also haven't been doing nothing when it comes to quilting. I realised I hadn't posted about this string quilt that I really enjoyed making as its amazingly easy. It's a 'Spin me round' block, but is also doing the rounds on Facebook on various scrap quilting pages. Its all a matter of cutting two 9.5" by 6.5" rectangles at 45 degrees and then sewing them (the first one with a partial seam) around the 3.5" centre square. There are so many possibilities, but I found it a great way to use up some of those strings. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDe6Da806wJpT-Yu1zDXaRqkr7BNvV0FSOZGOj7KJiGrKauybvMqe22tKcfiFB-OVQQrNSfglOpJ-QbJ_jf6sODM_bQFyBTmQQVxttooiRutYjsApFaXpiGA20iHZQ4JrPMnZ9tlNObN8/s1600/IMG_20190823_142209605.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDe6Da806wJpT-Yu1zDXaRqkr7BNvV0FSOZGOj7KJiGrKauybvMqe22tKcfiFB-OVQQrNSfglOpJ-QbJ_jf6sODM_bQFyBTmQQVxttooiRutYjsApFaXpiGA20iHZQ4JrPMnZ9tlNObN8/s640/IMG_20190823_142209605.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I sashed and used cornerstones before adding a couple more borders. Then I did a simple stipple all over this so as not to take away from the many busy fabrics. It was a really quick quilt to make and then given to a local hospice where I have a friend who nurses. A bit of brightness to peoples' lives when the going is very tough.<br />
<br />
For the backing, I had picked up a sheet from our local second hand shop that I thought would work well. So here it is:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwnv76gYuj2C3EU2V2-FFcsmicbBCxy_UcestuX5v8ViqU20B1nQsw4ucQKH9811BIox4QZ8K0QN8fBUYlxSoC9wKbznuD5N1GfsddCfQm1uVAfegZDTMKDK_BG9aSdQJ7nvUDY5QemY/s1600/IMG_20190823_142235299.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwnv76gYuj2C3EU2V2-FFcsmicbBCxy_UcestuX5v8ViqU20B1nQsw4ucQKH9811BIox4QZ8K0QN8fBUYlxSoC9wKbznuD5N1GfsddCfQm1uVAfegZDTMKDK_BG9aSdQJ7nvUDY5QemY/s640/IMG_20190823_142235299.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It makes the quilt reversible really, so even more variety. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then towards the end of August I finally got around to quilting a top that I'd had sitting for several months. I had just not completed the final borders as they were a little fiddly with pinwheels in the corners. Once I had it sandwiched I had fun doing the quilting. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0AKRBcMtKjojHZ9yveacP4hfpCC7w0zLf7L8L4wh8EwNOhuL0hjcf4rQ3sZvuI3oKDJWAqRuPeF_fcULq2wEAc1BKE3ahXT6h6fzW4ZQ22lN6wqKyuUiXIfEi5yUT-B794CXblAs6Db4/s1600/IMG_20190828_155427723.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="624" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0AKRBcMtKjojHZ9yveacP4hfpCC7w0zLf7L8L4wh8EwNOhuL0hjcf4rQ3sZvuI3oKDJWAqRuPeF_fcULq2wEAc1BKE3ahXT6h6fzW4ZQ22lN6wqKyuUiXIfEi5yUT-B794CXblAs6Db4/s640/IMG_20190828_155427723.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did loose spineless feathers diagonally across the half square triangles, then in the borders those loops that always remind me of a musical clef. On the pinwheels I did a bit of a spiral. The pale lemon hasn't come out quite as true as the real colour but you get the impression anyway. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a closer up of the loops, spirals and some of the feathers. I had begun with a fat quarter bundle but also added some of my own fabrics in but I really like the variety of patterns that seem to work well together. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJhVWoqRFnCaJU7tNpa66y_xUIV-VcAuheiaSBJ6LKHZsksT06jnHDaRna3F9tWGS29FXhi23UliqAOn_RhWF6tBGFyiJFrX0LQ6w9Rlqj8f3T8ADIPbRcR-6tap1tREtvlI4oLx1iR4/s1600/IMG_20190828_155514306.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJhVWoqRFnCaJU7tNpa66y_xUIV-VcAuheiaSBJ6LKHZsksT06jnHDaRna3F9tWGS29FXhi23UliqAOn_RhWF6tBGFyiJFrX0LQ6w9Rlqj8f3T8ADIPbRcR-6tap1tREtvlI4oLx1iR4/s640/IMG_20190828_155514306.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The backing was a solid which I had also used in the border, but wouldn't you know it, not quite enough. Isn't that where our creativity comes in? So I added something similar enough in tone to blend quite nicely. The afternoon sun was creeping in when I took this but I do enjoy seeing the quilting, probably as close as I'll ever get to a whole cloth!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4aNntSIa0EkUeMLsL9d7h1SF5he8VoGRJx-bPdnHeDos0GfDETkIveB9VT2oj6oXyZrP3AM6SD493_Vl1jsmibdSsHzDSqrDaTmhBe_NNWSeUTFeQu3iGAhDN9hEzWDA_KUOR_zx7NBc/s1600/IMG_20190828_155630464.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4aNntSIa0EkUeMLsL9d7h1SF5he8VoGRJx-bPdnHeDos0GfDETkIveB9VT2oj6oXyZrP3AM6SD493_Vl1jsmibdSsHzDSqrDaTmhBe_NNWSeUTFeQu3iGAhDN9hEzWDA_KUOR_zx7NBc/s640/IMG_20190828_155630464.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally for now, a close up of the soft feathers. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have made other quilts during September, but I think they'll have to be for another blog. This one has sufficient photos for now. This one has yet to find a home, but I'm sure it's time will come. </div>

So when a friend recently commented how she liked this quilt:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigDRjg30zz2COG0CxyHUFVFf0fUmBNDDrIS2-UI5xyK_zr4WJIzNBYyB0VzeG2jgtBR1MI8ezXN4n6Jt1FZFtSC7Wj1whXyGAI-zqBLYjXZamCW7_DpmKmpSMLCNix0CfeGlvEw2KFgnU/s1600/IMG_20151202_152957163_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigDRjg30zz2COG0CxyHUFVFf0fUmBNDDrIS2-UI5xyK_zr4WJIzNBYyB0VzeG2jgtBR1MI8ezXN4n6Jt1FZFtSC7Wj1whXyGAI-zqBLYjXZamCW7_DpmKmpSMLCNix0CfeGlvEw2KFgnU/s400/IMG_20151202_152957163_HDR.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I thought I'd have another go and make one for her. So I proceeded to gather all my 2.5" squares and fabric to make the half square triangles (from 4" squares right sides together, sewn a quarter inch around the edge then cut diagonally to yield 4 HST). </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I laid them out as I went along, but somewhere in the transition to our holiday place, I must have moved things around a little, as this is what I ended up with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMxrv1uf88_2y9N4hb1HyDEtqZQ8-P_M02BLU7c4om405p7IpZGE_8gv5pr_Suj7CAN5rVYEzMEzQSliWfIl12J8uaopwf9cdLYY1SqdOKgexVsK2XEYBmbo3P7shCRYcTAIoCxOdHKcc/s1600/IMG_20190809_085936240.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMxrv1uf88_2y9N4hb1HyDEtqZQ8-P_M02BLU7c4om405p7IpZGE_8gv5pr_Suj7CAN5rVYEzMEzQSliWfIl12J8uaopwf9cdLYY1SqdOKgexVsK2XEYBmbo3P7shCRYcTAIoCxOdHKcc/s640/IMG_20190809_085936240.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As well as the change in layout, it looks brighter than the first one, perhaps more red and yellow highlights. While I stuck with the feathers in the lighter sections, I chose to do curves in the darker squares. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLNZFUBhMs8n0GToXaHDTV6H3uJXu_BXOALGmsMhU-bUUQEP7_t8oDFZac0Pdu-VQpKvPyn7UrzBh4IGUzHSNQSIIMzHqBN1r5-qIX0X7RNlQj-a_uDBeeaMVBJvWWy_ahaE4WcGgHiWo/s1600/IMG_20190809_085954461.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLNZFUBhMs8n0GToXaHDTV6H3uJXu_BXOALGmsMhU-bUUQEP7_t8oDFZac0Pdu-VQpKvPyn7UrzBh4IGUzHSNQSIIMzHqBN1r5-qIX0X7RNlQj-a_uDBeeaMVBJvWWy_ahaE4WcGgHiWo/s640/IMG_20190809_085954461.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then around the edges, I did some spineless or floppy feathers. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfF9tKYop2Lju5sDN9NYOQZ-YyMskPwK1XXhF-mQxWk2AzcUFjw7om6Bx8GxquF990tb_KnUh33T1JhZHcMqH-VDOEzmTwWuZ4YvPk2yXg1S1EwnIusoobMh5t0MMfAhIE71YEeF11k6k/s1600/IMG_20190809_090022871.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfF9tKYop2Lju5sDN9NYOQZ-YyMskPwK1XXhF-mQxWk2AzcUFjw7om6Bx8GxquF990tb_KnUh33T1JhZHcMqH-VDOEzmTwWuZ4YvPk2yXg1S1EwnIusoobMh5t0MMfAhIE71YEeF11k6k/s640/IMG_20190809_090022871.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is probably the closest I've ever come to having the back appear like a wholecloth with the quilting. I delivered it today, much to her surprise and I think she liked it. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3axcokxwN80WhmFq22hhQSCGCOk-URKvn15z6gPhG4RPcg6P6IvLV0A6bnWzF25scdV3fXqFuZBAoo46rPakqSzsv067Qf0KL1LIslt0FrX_hesCe_ax-3Sui5tGfGQZXIik30E5ailI/s1600/IMG_20190809_090108905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3axcokxwN80WhmFq22hhQSCGCOk-URKvn15z6gPhG4RPcg6P6IvLV0A6bnWzF25scdV3fXqFuZBAoo46rPakqSzsv067Qf0KL1LIslt0FrX_hesCe_ax-3Sui5tGfGQZXIik30E5ailI/s320/IMG_20190809_090108905.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As for my collection of scraps, do they seem reduced at all? Doesn't seem like it, but we know that they multiply in discreet, amazing and secret ways don't we?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ah well, on to the next one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

And I can pass them on to friends which is always lovely.<br />
<br />
I thought I had posted about a couple that I made recently, but found I hadn't done that, so here are 2 that are the same pattern, but appear quite differently because of the different colourings of them.<br />
<br />
This one for a friend's grandson:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rather than using a white for the obvious 'ladder' that appears in the centre of the quilt, I chose a softer cream and interspersed that with a light patterned block that has the key colours of the quilt in it: turquoise, yellow and brown. The darkest fabric, the brown also features those colours. </div>
<br />
I also really enjoy doing the free form feathers or spineless feathers and doing those diagonally helps to focus the eye in that direction. Having the narrow half inch colour between the cream borders also helps to frame the centre well.<br />
<br />
This one is also the same pattern, though I have also added another border onto it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ_oTGHfymntI-xmOKVU96K9CG70PuBCmRQkdCP_20SOtgl-HDgCiYJYR7mLtdND0EBR9wCx0V5gQ7xc5lL7QPrnPkih1mi9f-sRXa4plG8zI8HEomWsSVOhpq9ozZvqD9vGp-hd1uKEs/s1600/IMG_20190511_083925257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ_oTGHfymntI-xmOKVU96K9CG70PuBCmRQkdCP_20SOtgl-HDgCiYJYR7mLtdND0EBR9wCx0V5gQ7xc5lL7QPrnPkih1mi9f-sRXa4plG8zI8HEomWsSVOhpq9ozZvqD9vGp-hd1uKEs/s640/IMG_20190511_083925257.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While having someone to hold it up is great for the quilt, having it flat on the ground does show the quilting more clearly. </div>
<br />
So that's a recent couple, on to the next one!<br />
Until next time,<br />

I did add or substitute one for some fabric from my stash as the fabric was too light to complete the pattern. The turquoise at the top here is the one I added to the quilt rather than a golden tone. It seemed to add balance to the quilt to me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiayLweNZpRJjTVNXTjawNuj0BvUOks8hO7_PBf5I81kxP0XHVx5tKmyta0fC4CtNEkL5DswXQ8gRUb8Yh-K9HulRuC1hQ6e7kZwmf2QbQVbAYzJn4gE_uNaQsyuyTM_IQXwACxVSKpSco/s1600/IMG_20190719_125506785.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiayLweNZpRJjTVNXTjawNuj0BvUOks8hO7_PBf5I81kxP0XHVx5tKmyta0fC4CtNEkL5DswXQ8gRUb8Yh-K9HulRuC1hQ6e7kZwmf2QbQVbAYzJn4gE_uNaQsyuyTM_IQXwACxVSKpSco/s640/IMG_20190719_125506785.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Windmills are very easy, particularly if you begin with two squares right sides together and sew the quarter inch all around the sides. Then all you need to do is cross cut diagonally as well as vertically and horizontally - that gives 8 half square triangles, making two windmills! All I needed to do then was work out how long I wanted the chunk of fabric to be and add some sashings. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A friend had also given me some really cute fabric with foxes and other animals to use as backing. So it was on to the free-motion quilting. I thought I'd give swirls a go and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj35NdaceQcQd0ClukCs5aq4Y3ot7DQGKyTTHNAyv5wCHshIg3JX1Qk8nOGcJtx9D4jOArx0fzG_BJy2eZAxBuVgDXZFhHTlJjC5ldy8zz1_8QpW1UsrP0V0_8LObHLpjAKvHY-_t6O1HY/s1600/IMG_20190719_125543693.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj35NdaceQcQd0ClukCs5aq4Y3ot7DQGKyTTHNAyv5wCHshIg3JX1Qk8nOGcJtx9D4jOArx0fzG_BJy2eZAxBuVgDXZFhHTlJjC5ldy8zz1_8QpW1UsrP0V0_8LObHLpjAKvHY-_t6O1HY/s640/IMG_20190719_125543693.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the backing worked really well with the few colours on the front, so that was a win all around. This was always destined to be a baby quilt, it was just a matter of which baby. A friend told me today that her niece is pregnant with her second child, so I'm ahead of the game!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've even got the top of the two and a half inch squares together, I just need to join the backing and then sandwich it up, then on to more quilting. Just as well I love it!</div>

When making a quilt from two and half inch squares, (as I'm currently doing) the appeal of 3 inch squares is quite strong it seems. Just that extra half inch - and the fact that a friend had gifted me some strips that size, called my name and I had to make some four patches. Beginning with the brightly coloured squares (second from the edge) I found colours that were either included or co-ordinated well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The centre went together quite quickly, then what to put on the border? I auditioned reds, blues, greens and then hit on this one that seems to work, perhaps because it links to the centre green. Since I'm also quilting another quilt that is a bit more intensive in the specific repeated pattern, the simplicity of the orange peel quilting and spineless feathers, which I really enjoy, made this a far easier and quicker finish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5g8mcd-j67IIIQZVvgCiTkgSo3wT9OTyjYq3tMAtWeW0-3XoWIYVi-F9tt4VX1MnfBnUDoP0WAG3_74-hJ_lEq8c_YBdNOVJ6kFREWi0eMf02_3-GQ37PRHN6Y8jNJtO49xfh6hYp00c/s1600/IMG_20190703_090314789.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5g8mcd-j67IIIQZVvgCiTkgSo3wT9OTyjYq3tMAtWeW0-3XoWIYVi-F9tt4VX1MnfBnUDoP0WAG3_74-hJ_lEq8c_YBdNOVJ6kFREWi0eMf02_3-GQ37PRHN6Y8jNJtO49xfh6hYp00c/s640/IMG_20190703_090314789.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a close up of some of the bright colours:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIduNGkxtTXz3yOiYxJ5eJYlY5D9qBJfb01YDK27jxabehH4HJLgnuV9dYuHy-fKbl9aTSaIH_nlHNCKgOhiY-wPLC2ooj-25SETMeSkthNNbUwSRlqwUHiWPXOtqGTk3GOGRRdCzwj70/s1600/IMG_20190703_090332910.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIduNGkxtTXz3yOiYxJ5eJYlY5D9qBJfb01YDK27jxabehH4HJLgnuV9dYuHy-fKbl9aTSaIH_nlHNCKgOhiY-wPLC2ooj-25SETMeSkthNNbUwSRlqwUHiWPXOtqGTk3GOGRRdCzwj70/s400/IMG_20190703_090332910.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I am so fortunate to have such wonderful friends who share their scraps, or pieces of backing they don't currently have a purpose for. Another friend gave me this cute sheeting that just seemed perfect for this baby/child quilt:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf3m2OLL4OGhPqVck0bV9kJf_P1q5OvH0KwS29BxCSIG1WD4OW7fU9d6xi9lzt_2pmNn5CifK7OdPDpbuAqIS7SdlAfBSOU2b6VvTL0rayCYXNBTtcaNKtg072-0AWEDOywckF66yNgjs/s1600/IMG_20190703_090351864.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf3m2OLL4OGhPqVck0bV9kJf_P1q5OvH0KwS29BxCSIG1WD4OW7fU9d6xi9lzt_2pmNn5CifK7OdPDpbuAqIS7SdlAfBSOU2b6VvTL0rayCYXNBTtcaNKtg072-0AWEDOywckF66yNgjs/s320/IMG_20190703_090351864.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I guess its on to the other works in progress now - amazing how much fun a small (this one's 45 inch square) quilt can be, very satisfying. I'll get the binding on and pass it on to my friend whose new baby grandson came three weeks early and has spent some time in intensive care. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Her mother had done it some time ago, but hadn't got around to quilting it.<br />
So here it is, the man himself with his reindeer across the sky.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHLmG8B_ZQo-5cNZw62AqLiyIyGa_iGua9DldNYSLPqRTyg6hfJcnx9kev4-5X3Wq86CNIrm9i8pLuQXlQyWTHQaFBqi408R4k7W_1sAVLrBfTuUs3oTuN1NZdx1Jec6U31bCePeNRyX8/s1600/IMG_20190627_130531936.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHLmG8B_ZQo-5cNZw62AqLiyIyGa_iGua9DldNYSLPqRTyg6hfJcnx9kev4-5X3Wq86CNIrm9i8pLuQXlQyWTHQaFBqi408R4k7W_1sAVLrBfTuUs3oTuN1NZdx1Jec6U31bCePeNRyX8/s640/IMG_20190627_130531936.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I had fun with this, look at those reindeer go:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-CP3ris3eAFeTZropO7D0141vRLPPDk-Em6zlszkZ7VZAfzipYzcx1foTtWb1yrez-yFH4KeU-KVOji5ohYdfSuoH4LrdikJi0fojh1H9WZS5UD3294eh130749OIey9DWvT-4rczUHA/s1600/IMG_20190627_130550234.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-CP3ris3eAFeTZropO7D0141vRLPPDk-Em6zlszkZ7VZAfzipYzcx1foTtWb1yrez-yFH4KeU-KVOji5ohYdfSuoH4LrdikJi0fojh1H9WZS5UD3294eh130749OIey9DWvT-4rczUHA/s640/IMG_20190627_130550234.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A simple stipple can be so effective in making the background recede and the main attraction pop a bit more. I did an orange peel around the squares in the border and then had some fun on the trees and roof tops:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge9MmmS4Rh8JYwDt-coM1avWGsv8P2DN54U_D3SW2T9q99JP1bHhyMeXOqBlLoYzd1DAho70XO1d6L6HG3FLbt_hL_Os0dCUPjKN1HxrtQsPLQcwKzFvp0E3rTO3EgNn6MuFsHZsusDBQ/s1600/IMG_20190627_130541737.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge9MmmS4Rh8JYwDt-coM1avWGsv8P2DN54U_D3SW2T9q99JP1bHhyMeXOqBlLoYzd1DAho70XO1d6L6HG3FLbt_hL_Os0dCUPjKN1HxrtQsPLQcwKzFvp0E3rTO3EgNn6MuFsHZsusDBQ/s640/IMG_20190627_130541737.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Perhaps its only Down Under where we think of having a Christmas in July event, since its our winter and thoughts of cooking a turkey or hot dinner seem far more sensible. Perhaps in the northern hemisphere it seems a bit strange - but imagine Christmas in your summer and you'll experience what we usually do in December. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So while I didn't put this panel together, I did enjoy quilting it and my friend seems pretty happy with it too. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Until next time,</div>

So my latest finish ticks all my boxes. I have made one of these before and since its made from 2 and half inch strips, it goes together quite quickly. The fun comes in the quilting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeSZseI72EHBlOqXTtz689oqpkwfbzCFXiYzqt_LwRKFf79tbyVtjrsYKJzPrV0LJAer4lGTLT1HED1zId6QDSoURlmKgEBhsda6oFsdkKP9KxrRmNayegupTD3yduPhZfM430x1q3c90/s1600/IMG_20190619_145140561.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeSZseI72EHBlOqXTtz689oqpkwfbzCFXiYzqt_LwRKFf79tbyVtjrsYKJzPrV0LJAer4lGTLT1HED1zId6QDSoURlmKgEBhsda6oFsdkKP9KxrRmNayegupTD3yduPhZfM430x1q3c90/s640/IMG_20190619_145140561.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I managed to get a photo just as the sunlight was beginning to fade so there is a little shadowing but it also shows up the quilting quite well - just a fun loopy feather type shape that adds texture but leaves the quilt feeling nice and cuddly soft.<br />
<br />
The gender of the baby was not known when I made the quilt, I thought it was quite nice that the first time parents wanted a surprise, so didn't find out what they were having (since knowing seems to be the norm). I found out last night that they've had a little girl, so these reddish/pink bears will be just fine - not that it would have mattered for a boy either since the bears are mostly brownish and really do we care about colours for babies?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkwmb-GFz1_vqD6lpx0bAfgC-2LKHkQMjQH63vIPlumVopVhNzhTPdRMEZLbu0cAzSjZG_SjYgMqlZUo5_TdgAXbjlAFJr6eAJiRSeVust3n_ZLPPxyWQTsZ57-nf1_lM0tptfvx9P8Mo/s1600/IMG_20190619_145151341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkwmb-GFz1_vqD6lpx0bAfgC-2LKHkQMjQH63vIPlumVopVhNzhTPdRMEZLbu0cAzSjZG_SjYgMqlZUo5_TdgAXbjlAFJr6eAJiRSeVust3n_ZLPPxyWQTsZ57-nf1_lM0tptfvx9P8Mo/s640/IMG_20190619_145151341.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt finishes around 46" square and I had a lovely buttermilk yellow for the backing which was the right size - another win. So here it is:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxHLrO3PveOWIw9XwPg2DHzS4tgX0Otw6hn1ZvH8Ut4zlDCREGwaS5i8Nez55S4djP1dSwnFjxUqxCclex9XkPP585TQ47mz6DhhXHEhUeSnnmqXh2STqqqpZcwEVb9LmSlQV0ai0YGIc/s1600/IMG_20190619_145214950.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxHLrO3PveOWIw9XwPg2DHzS4tgX0Otw6hn1ZvH8Ut4zlDCREGwaS5i8Nez55S4djP1dSwnFjxUqxCclex9XkPP585TQ47mz6DhhXHEhUeSnnmqXh2STqqqpZcwEVb9LmSlQV0ai0YGIc/s400/IMG_20190619_145214950.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Kind of looks more beige here, but trust me it's a lovely creamy yellow. I had enough of the brown from the top right bear for the binding, so this was all from my stash. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All I need to do now is add the label and it will be on its way to the family by the end of the week. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, back to all these 2 and half inch squares:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I chose some batik strips I had, joined them with a batik background and then it was just a matter of making it the appropriate length. The quilting I wanted to keep simple so that the fabrics still stood out. Since the groom was born in South Africa, I made the label with a saying I had heard from his father: "God writes straight with crooked lines" - it seemed appropriate with the quilting.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixK-EVnLyvp7WUxFqLk2rshZk7yUnZz7mr7HLc9QgHanOE5OEPu59m3DfRfYI7Cxy_7ZRJKpwabqOuAC9AxLwBPIVI2F3QJguSwOD90wo4Rhb_ZsUUaR4A4EfBs-IsslYopQIhHPjYDOI/s1600/IMG_20190404_103002984.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixK-EVnLyvp7WUxFqLk2rshZk7yUnZz7mr7HLc9QgHanOE5OEPu59m3DfRfYI7Cxy_7ZRJKpwabqOuAC9AxLwBPIVI2F3QJguSwOD90wo4Rhb_ZsUUaR4A4EfBs-IsslYopQIhHPjYDOI/s640/IMG_20190404_103002984.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The second was a rather quick make for a young woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She loves rainbow colours, so it seemed appropriate. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpdg5joEau4OUu1Nn-Ui1Su9XTBy105Yc5V1SmV7iQmLcbcnTYDVVxeVgsaF2E0UNphVM5rQxZs8oXtASxGUqs8-twbNREKVf6zCQmyWCyqzBjJtir4QtVrtXcOhY9E0TtGD6lTqZ7N18/s1600/IMG_20190409_082524347.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpdg5joEau4OUu1Nn-Ui1Su9XTBy105Yc5V1SmV7iQmLcbcnTYDVVxeVgsaF2E0UNphVM5rQxZs8oXtASxGUqs8-twbNREKVf6zCQmyWCyqzBjJtir4QtVrtXcOhY9E0TtGD6lTqZ7N18/s640/IMG_20190409_082524347.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Its a quickly pieced large block with 3 and half inch squares and the centre diamond made from four half square triangles - a great scrap user. I auditioned all kinds of border fabrics and finally settled on this one I've had in my stash for years. </div>
And the backing a sheet I've also used on a quilt in the previous post. It shows the quilting well and is quite neutral with the large circles.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_5gqZUg4mHPseKpmDRFOae8z19j2GObfopW51x5ZNsn2pZe7NfjQJOeu02AHVLpDhPFT8gDCKnl09W_4NLFpi1wFNRxjvXcc0y28uYpfLWq17PFC6yYcAsVqnHRXIhTYosjNciB6xoZo/s1600/IMG_20190409_082601455.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_5gqZUg4mHPseKpmDRFOae8z19j2GObfopW51x5ZNsn2pZe7NfjQJOeu02AHVLpDhPFT8gDCKnl09W_4NLFpi1wFNRxjvXcc0y28uYpfLWq17PFC6yYcAsVqnHRXIhTYosjNciB6xoZo/s640/IMG_20190409_082601455.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My third project I enjoyed, beginning with the fabric I used in the border then pulled out co-ordinating colours. The simple brick pattern goes together quickly and easily. I've made a couple with this pattern before. It also provides a lovely space to quilt spineless feathers on a diagonal. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrCksKTi30YOttha2a1tXjdjSXjfG4WZUtwTgKBNT8xulqAY-4DD7aSZ7wdcgf6yOdKeztt7u0Gs5cHx2FkioBxfulcL8TW24zxLsJX41LjAMY2IxQK4Y1Wc4XFHBG6y-03wFTtUv_jo/s1600/IMG_20190511_083932176.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrCksKTi30YOttha2a1tXjdjSXjfG4WZUtwTgKBNT8xulqAY-4DD7aSZ7wdcgf6yOdKeztt7u0Gs5cHx2FkioBxfulcL8TW24zxLsJX41LjAMY2IxQK4Y1Wc4XFHBG6y-03wFTtUv_jo/s640/IMG_20190511_083932176.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My handy holder up was around so I put him to work. Shame he's not around more often in this way! Just ignore the feet and slither of head showing at the top. I can't tell you how fiddly the small nine patch squares was in the first border. I think it's to do with my maths, but they seemed to take the same time as putting the centre together!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The backing was a couple of pieces plus a little left over batik to complete the centre section. Since the front was all stash I didn't mind buying a couple of small pieces for this. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXNz9jLVBu0St809YyNlDkPQ484tlWVyOC0QUPmN9XNNn8U6knieLXiJd-Id9sYpjmSM8_H0Npgh5zxWq89yngTRx688lgbT2uIBrfD90mbm5eWLxVFr9QbP0TtcUSsUF0dsGX01o4wB8/s1600/IMG_20190511_083941967.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXNz9jLVBu0St809YyNlDkPQ484tlWVyOC0QUPmN9XNNn8U6knieLXiJd-Id9sYpjmSM8_H0Npgh5zxWq89yngTRx688lgbT2uIBrfD90mbm5eWLxVFr9QbP0TtcUSsUF0dsGX01o4wB8/s640/IMG_20190511_083941967.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It went to a friend who's recently had a first grandchild. She seemed delighted with it. And I had fun putting it together. </div>
So it's on to the next project or projects, just a few on the go still.<br />
Until next time,<br />

Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802006440070002510noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4697161575740658362.post-65019628932550903802019-04-01T09:42:00.004+08:002019-04-01T09:42:54.646+08:00Hearts and babiesI mentioned in my last post, <a href="https://www.mypurplepatch.com/2019/03/the-clever-women-in-craft-group-that-i.html">Here</a>, that the craft group that I, along with a friend teach each week, had been making a bag and quilt for a little girl aged 4 who had open heart surgery.<br />
The quilt my friend and I put together is now completed and will be popped into the bag this week and given to the little girl.<br />
Here's how the quilt turned out:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVlF1jvczA3yffAskGOcB5DsDF2TOdLhXLrkEDGBYinOjBnTOhOzix1utajnfL-babmxuNpiYXc9TUm5C6PQWqu_1wfJ-uVR1oSLvgIiAQ5CUear9UG-y_8WXEwhktsNSLmi1XRSlg9Eo/s1600/IMG_20190401_090951295.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVlF1jvczA3yffAskGOcB5DsDF2TOdLhXLrkEDGBYinOjBnTOhOzix1utajnfL-babmxuNpiYXc9TUm5C6PQWqu_1wfJ-uVR1oSLvgIiAQ5CUear9UG-y_8WXEwhktsNSLmi1XRSlg9Eo/s640/IMG_20190401_090951295.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We had fun piecing the coloured blocks to co-ordinate with the rainbow blocks. And also the 'fun' of doing the calculations to cut the set in triangles! Phew, lucky my friend has taught maths. Anyway, I left the quilt with my friend all pinned in rows ready to be joined up. After completing the appliqued hearts, she very promptly (within a couple of days) passed it back to me. It was then up to me to find a backing - a sheet I had picked up that is proving to be very useful and versatile because of its large circles. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsy_uZzjUEfPorMBzmRhe2CblHUL_HN2BNRmj7TFqtW7wBlbkso-Z9QiumGv06RouS1zLAIr3osJxZ9mkOFCDzp01x1mJIPMsdaizWxdLbSJ_tlKkkFN3jQpRn825xMn7hm5I2OzwegLU/s1600/IMG_20190401_091046705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsy_uZzjUEfPorMBzmRhe2CblHUL_HN2BNRmj7TFqtW7wBlbkso-Z9QiumGv06RouS1zLAIr3osJxZ9mkOFCDzp01x1mJIPMsdaizWxdLbSJ_tlKkkFN3jQpRn825xMn7hm5I2OzwegLU/s640/IMG_20190401_091046705.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here's just a close up of the stippling around the hearts and the spineless feathers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8TpQlSkeJFeDrMXmdzhgP1mR-bNxIv4bcmFVKjJGu6m-Ll91H_fTlhyEQ9o8KXY1SS0w1mxGi-QVVaeJYt6uSRRAu4saOlpaSLWYKl2G1fOb2pDdbwzt8kaRCy8LvEHVRwQEqq6QblU/s1600/IMG_20190401_091022312.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8TpQlSkeJFeDrMXmdzhgP1mR-bNxIv4bcmFVKjJGu6m-Ll91H_fTlhyEQ9o8KXY1SS0w1mxGi-QVVaeJYt6uSRRAu4saOlpaSLWYKl2G1fOb2pDdbwzt8kaRCy8LvEHVRwQEqq6QblU/s640/IMG_20190401_091022312.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I mentioned to my friend that I would likely quilt spineless feathers in the white border she said: "Oh, couldn't you do hearts?" I answered truthfully, "Well, spineless feathers are much easier and I think they look rather like hearts anyway". She hasn't seen it other than a photo yet but she seems fine with it (thank goodness). Looking forward to seeing how the recipient and her Mum like what our lovely group has put together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I went on to complete a quilt begun a couple of months ago in anticipation of a friend's grandchild to be born in April. As things often do, it didn't work quite to plan in that I hadn't quite completed the quilt and the grandson made his appearance a little early! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had fun with this one which was one that Sarah made <a href="http://confessionsofafabricaddict.blogspot.com/2019/01/rockin-rectangles-begins-place-your-bet.html">Here</a>, that she called 'Place Your Bet'. I adapted to make the size a little smaller (50" by 43") and was very pleased to have all the fabric on hand in my stash. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Its a simple quilt that comes together quite quickly:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcpBw6x4iU_gujAufKYMpUm9f6r4CcrWtU6g7sjJaLcx1sjo1DwV9JxS4uc5d6k6zv2EQLcGywXSkeIr2HXLoxZE96lfZlgglHongZqcO_3T4u4lUpZUj9NOZfi3P3vEeFxdOwSExZUjY/s1600/IMG_20190401_091114231.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcpBw6x4iU_gujAufKYMpUm9f6r4CcrWtU6g7sjJaLcx1sjo1DwV9JxS4uc5d6k6zv2EQLcGywXSkeIr2HXLoxZE96lfZlgglHongZqcO_3T4u4lUpZUj9NOZfi3P3vEeFxdOwSExZUjY/s640/IMG_20190401_091114231.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again you can see the spineless feathers in the border, but also in the body of the quilt this time too. I think I may have to find another 'go to' pattern for variety's sake, but this one is really so easy. I don't know how you learn new patterns, but I spend some time doodling on paper first of all before giving the pattern a go on some real fabric. Then I progress to a quilt. Mine is all done on a domestic machine, my Janome that I'm very happy with. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern on the green I think of as loop de loops but they also remind me of the start of a musical clef. The backing was also another sheet I had been given, this time very suitable for a new born, with cute teddy bears and balloons. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtXrOtkKoNQ-yA9ljb0ECrXxVHsUy2F3_8bu4Dp1FfD5hCiYSluYtB9Rb_jpZlwIc9KEZVPeFP29MVZfYVT9AQL_Dj0blN4VYEmRVvaseXtYravd_27CgqI78W0GnetEPgbVYbfgNbfi8/s1600/IMG_20190401_091134909.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtXrOtkKoNQ-yA9ljb0ECrXxVHsUy2F3_8bu4Dp1FfD5hCiYSluYtB9Rb_jpZlwIc9KEZVPeFP29MVZfYVT9AQL_Dj0blN4VYEmRVvaseXtYravd_27CgqI78W0GnetEPgbVYbfgNbfi8/s640/IMG_20190401_091134909.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this one feels like a win on many fronts - using up some scraps, a U.F.O. now completed, a gift for a friend's new grandchild and I'm feeling freer to move on to a new project, unless I really should sandwich and quilt up the 3 tops I know are lurking in my sewing room.....Oh and the table runner I need to complete to give to a couple getting married next weekend. Oh well, its all sewing that's what counts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

We wanted bright colours as we are making a quilt and a bag (to put it in) for a four year old little girl who has recently needed to have open heart surgery. Isn't it lovely and bright?<br />

A heart was appliqued on (which also helps to tell the front from the back) and it co-ordinates with the hearts on the pocket inside. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You might also be able to see that the handles are made from the 'Very Hungry Caterpillar' fabric that was around a little while ago. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I'm still working on the quilt itself, so will show that a little later, but for now I think this is a very cute bag for a 4 year old!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've also completed another quilt this month, hey I'm on a roll, this is my 5th item (4 quilts, one table runner) so far this year. You'll have to excuse the terrible background, no helper and I seem to have lost the crop ability on my photos (will explore that a little later). This has been mailed off to a friend who has been diagnosed with a rather horrible disease for which there's no current cure (motor neurone). I can't imagine what that journey is like, and it seems like such a small thing to send some care in the form of a quilty hug. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a close up of the squares and some of the quilting - spineless feathers, that I had fun with. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9954xXOx7EGT4kvZdTOf5puuYqO8CBUrtfD5OMN4-nnOBt_mXoYsJArLlJxec4lBoegsmVuBC8HoLRzlAoHdXnu_mee-hHD1J_Hw0AhVKBE7PwtdEKkJSuGjip4l-bkVFgB-Fif5YfHk/s1600/IMG_20190326_171923916.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9954xXOx7EGT4kvZdTOf5puuYqO8CBUrtfD5OMN4-nnOBt_mXoYsJArLlJxec4lBoegsmVuBC8HoLRzlAoHdXnu_mee-hHD1J_Hw0AhVKBE7PwtdEKkJSuGjip4l-bkVFgB-Fif5YfHk/s640/IMG_20190326_171923916.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is a great pattern to use up scraps. The green I had only a metre of and the cream backgrounds are actually 2 different fabrics, but so similar the eye doesn't initially notice. And as for 2 and half inch squares, doesn't everyone have some of those? Hourglass blocks are great to bring out a secondary pattern to otherwise quite ordinary squares. I'm sure I'll be making another of these soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I hope to be posting again soon, pictures of the finished quilt for the little girl.</div>

However, I have been doing a bit of an inventory of quilts - their photos and labels and so when I realised that last year (2018) I completed 24 quilts I felt a little better. While there were 2 or 3 that had been in progress for some time, most were begun last year. Also quite a few were baby quilts, so their size made them manageable in more ways than one.<br />
<br />
I find baby quilts hold my attention for long enough, are a good size to work through my domestic machine and give me a great sense of achievement once they are completed.<br />
This panel recently completed and now ready to be given away, is a case in point:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi6jXyo8hdWKOs5Jl0EqhmfKK1m9yRUw4htkbC7KZYo90khL0UoRzminZ1Gurp7vsmCkvjxws0wupZVcuNAO9iu7acNi1YCBRFI-isuCae5qdPlg0Kz_anV4wXWg3Ko9KsPjjJfGOydTM/s1600/IMG_20190311_115539836.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi6jXyo8hdWKOs5Jl0EqhmfKK1m9yRUw4htkbC7KZYo90khL0UoRzminZ1Gurp7vsmCkvjxws0wupZVcuNAO9iu7acNi1YCBRFI-isuCae5qdPlg0Kz_anV4wXWg3Ko9KsPjjJfGOydTM/s640/IMG_20190311_115539836.jpg" width="480" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It was a panel that a friend gave me and so really the borders were the only parts to piece and then it became a question of how to quilt it. I did some lines on the rabbit body parts and then had fun with a leaf type shape after some tighter stipple around the characters themselves. My 'go to' clef type shape is so versatile in terms of the size it can be adjusted to, that I find it a really useful quilting shape to use - especially for borders. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also received some lovely background type fabric in January and paired it with some batik I had on hand to create this table runner:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjueR7dHctOAD4__u6N-UNk9QpBCJl_TuwjIkyPkEysE1wcOH8JNHFod4zksJdoXFDObs1Ks3D2G_1ijySxMn3MKzDGc7_qPcMfKTXx0eqLSa3NxoXCohwwhu_Mc_eSLE8ujvurOYMB2Fs/s1600/IMG_20190201_112742321.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjueR7dHctOAD4__u6N-UNk9QpBCJl_TuwjIkyPkEysE1wcOH8JNHFod4zksJdoXFDObs1Ks3D2G_1ijySxMn3MKzDGc7_qPcMfKTXx0eqLSa3NxoXCohwwhu_Mc_eSLE8ujvurOYMB2Fs/s640/IMG_20190201_112742321.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Since I'm keeping this one, I'm pleased I like how it turned out. Starting with the churn dash blocks then put on point and adding the cream set in triangles, it came together quickly too. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was a little surprised to realise that from the 24 quilts I made last year, only 2 have stayed with me. This one that has so many small scrap pieces it serves as a lovely reminder of previous quilts made:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipm1sV-ubhHXHicL9CJ3WRGDeG99IhjQlxIJYfh_zMb1Zou00WGx9_l7hOrFRT2zqei4ygciSk3TTSKAZsXsd3iKYsj07AgUmbnuMK7haLCg1XLUZ3okB2VGcMuV86Xuai3UDGyS-EwAM/s1600/IMG_20180626_103154536.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipm1sV-ubhHXHicL9CJ3WRGDeG99IhjQlxIJYfh_zMb1Zou00WGx9_l7hOrFRT2zqei4ygciSk3TTSKAZsXsd3iKYsj07AgUmbnuMK7haLCg1XLUZ3okB2VGcMuV86Xuai3UDGyS-EwAM/s400/IMG_20180626_103154536.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the teddy bears which, who knows, may one day be a quilt for a future grandchild?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv9dBoggqBLSfAywsHWw3h41sULR046rARNmbfPIPxCiyJmcW51nk5tGcHJYSFKLfy35YGeuu1SboHme6csR594AcTlhZ5_F3tyh6Q4aZpieNH20xV5U8Tinxj8HMrdwHRSZi3rJi3X3w/s1600/IMG_20180717_081546379.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv9dBoggqBLSfAywsHWw3h41sULR046rARNmbfPIPxCiyJmcW51nk5tGcHJYSFKLfy35YGeuu1SboHme6csR594AcTlhZ5_F3tyh6Q4aZpieNH20xV5U8Tinxj8HMrdwHRSZi3rJi3X3w/s320/IMG_20180717_081546379.jpg" width="270" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't know whether anyone else is a little tardy with their labels, but I know that if I need to gift a quilt then it has a label straight away. If a quilt is 'in waiting', that is I'm not quite sure who it's for as yet, but I anticipate giving it away sometime (as the quilt above), then its label doesn't seem to get made or sewn on straight away. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As an ex-librarian who likes to keep a good and true record of all my quilts, numbering and photographing them, this can be a bit of a problem. While my record keeping of the numbers is quite good, and then often the photos, it seems the actual label making lags far behind. As a consequence, some quilts that are here at home may have a number recorded on paper, but no label to match - until this week. I now feel very satisfied that any quilt residing with me is now duly labelled and I have done the old fashioned print photos and file them in an album too. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I know that electronic records are wonderful, but there's just something pleasant about being able to thumb through an album and recall quilts that I've made - for inspiration and satisfaction. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So finally, the most recent quilt completed, labelled, ready for a friend's 60th birthday:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3ArI232AVjcD67c586pV6ZD_KEzkVDB8646SnjAFo9vZGkbNzTYhhvKIfikv9YMabRyMOi0gpbz2Y4pyON5FUtj7drq0NFk_i14r46qM2nr5-T0nwPLUvyiRh2W88ja_D3pjX0h-15wQ/s1600/IMG_20181217_155841393.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3ArI232AVjcD67c586pV6ZD_KEzkVDB8646SnjAFo9vZGkbNzTYhhvKIfikv9YMabRyMOi0gpbz2Y4pyON5FUtj7drq0NFk_i14r46qM2nr5-T0nwPLUvyiRh2W88ja_D3pjX0h-15wQ/s640/IMG_20181217_155841393.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Some colourful strings, paired with a cream that allowed me to have fun with the quilting. Hope she likes it! And hope I stay on top of those labels for this year. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Until next time,</div>

Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802006440070002510noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4697161575740658362.post-17751721882938806512018-09-14T10:59:00.002+08:002018-09-14T10:59:44.285+08:00Baby patchesI'd made four baby quilts for people that I knew had recently had their baby boys. But it turned out that there were also 2 others in the group (unknown to me) who also had boys. It didn't seem very fair that four out of the six received quilts and 2 didn't. So I set about finding a reasonably quick and easy baby pattern. Disappearing four patches seemed to fit the bill quite well. Starting with six and half inch squares, two background and two colour and then once they were sewn together, just slicing 2" from the centre line and rearranging the now nine patch block that results from the slicing. There are plenty on Pintrest to check out.<br />
<br />
Raiding the stash is so good when you can find fabrics that work together well and you also have the backing on hand. Here is quilt number one:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYXCk4NtYo2Oyck75LLF7t6d8n1ZU1B3F3wm1R7l57UmSR4r9BsaIwLUCVuM-0hOvpJZPS1YJ-Go99WQSkp8fsQ7P34s7oiRL2iwX8TWWYIZ5CNFtzdur-fQpRN8xKYzYPYAD7oA430PA/s1600/IMG_20180914_102945268.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYXCk4NtYo2Oyck75LLF7t6d8n1ZU1B3F3wm1R7l57UmSR4r9BsaIwLUCVuM-0hOvpJZPS1YJ-Go99WQSkp8fsQ7P34s7oiRL2iwX8TWWYIZ5CNFtzdur-fQpRN8xKYzYPYAD7oA430PA/s640/IMG_20180914_102945268.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I had made the centre I was rather concerned as I didn't think I liked it any more, or something didn't seem to work. Once I auditioned the turquoise and found the trees in my stash (hurrah!) it seemed Ok again.<br />
What else to put on the backing to stretch the trees - what else but leaves? So here's the backing.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibRL4Jug2Ghad218-yS63UYoEZ9-EO6xBG3x9wTMiR5hDtHcmuC1qOQnvNCyPycRB2x1wlNUUD1kk8Fi1NqObOTtCebXuybrgIEt3n0sTnl-0kHx3wrVoenGxgr87aouTznu4yaljH-J4/s1600/IMG_20180914_103010404_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibRL4Jug2Ghad218-yS63UYoEZ9-EO6xBG3x9wTMiR5hDtHcmuC1qOQnvNCyPycRB2x1wlNUUD1kk8Fi1NqObOTtCebXuybrgIEt3n0sTnl-0kHx3wrVoenGxgr87aouTznu4yaljH-J4/s400/IMG_20180914_103010404_HDR.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And another friend asked, 'are they tomatoes?' Yes they are, what fun, here's a close up. And I'm getting the hang of those corners where I'm doing a kind of treble clef pattern in the border. Practise, practise, practise it really is the only thing that works.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbTsXZKGwKVIZms3xXHtX_eICaLIKaYXYJ2uJNqIaRGpkhv5DSpATNtLqNDVt0dz2KzbR3Eq6_VBdShBLPP9hAk2Bx8iinQZFFfrq4XwAQrmf-0aW-BHQlX8j_Ded-mxljn2XlhabZKVE/s1600/IMG_20180914_102952093.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbTsXZKGwKVIZms3xXHtX_eICaLIKaYXYJ2uJNqIaRGpkhv5DSpATNtLqNDVt0dz2KzbR3Eq6_VBdShBLPP9hAk2Bx8iinQZFFfrq4XwAQrmf-0aW-BHQlX8j_Ded-mxljn2XlhabZKVE/s640/IMG_20180914_102952093.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So what about the second one you ask? Well, for that I began with a kind of check or tartan. It had a number of colours I could have pulled out, including red - but that is a strong bold colour best used sparingly I think. It also had brown, but in the end the green and yellow won out.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhFQftsZfi5tkqOHJC5KuHY_XoG-gZtZA1ljI_NtBhzdeTnQk-Z9UfF7LQpcQh-ezUIXGdmIWsBEnnsjrAedPAJ1XeG2gFr_bwjFxW4TB-jrHrm-BQehPtJGXETro7bOV9ivDzzugh9nc/s1600/IMG_20180914_103053648.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhFQftsZfi5tkqOHJC5KuHY_XoG-gZtZA1ljI_NtBhzdeTnQk-Z9UfF7LQpcQh-ezUIXGdmIWsBEnnsjrAedPAJ1XeG2gFr_bwjFxW4TB-jrHrm-BQehPtJGXETro7bOV9ivDzzugh9nc/s640/IMG_20180914_103053648.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Again, once the centre was together I wasn't sure about it.<br />
Thank goodness for quilty friends. I have one who is very good with colour and especially borders. She suggested the narrow tartan then the creamish background before yellow as a final border. I think it works just fine. And again, fun fabric from the stash for the backing. This time its cabbages!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmwgvwpASFjzWJKZZn0Lh4b0gA9NW8lGAmSb5HlezM0u6jXjtaM5OHcLpsa7rYNzUlOUYT_ycEZQKRkHd7Avl3kq69mUdYJrEiXJ5kvun08U2uN1Y-x4zVLOEr60jkJ1KXlQrGuaHzwgY/s1600/IMG_20180914_105419970.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmwgvwpASFjzWJKZZn0Lh4b0gA9NW8lGAmSb5HlezM0u6jXjtaM5OHcLpsa7rYNzUlOUYT_ycEZQKRkHd7Avl3kq69mUdYJrEiXJ5kvun08U2uN1Y-x4zVLOEr60jkJ1KXlQrGuaHzwgY/s320/IMG_20180914_105419970.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So two more quilts on their way for babies. I have such fun doing these, they are quick projects and the satisfaction of completing them and using up some stash is just great.<br />
They both finish up at 44" by 55", a good size for a cot, or on the floor, whatever.<br />
<br />
Until next time,<br />

Easy simple bricks is a very basic pattern that I did earlier <a href="http://www.mypurplepatch.com/2018/08/harlequin-finish.html">here</a>. But I chose just one fabric, the turquoise giraffes to put into a different collection of fabrics. The collection had purples and oranges in it, like this:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiszcK-Q9KKlF5MfOc3V-0HGqI0iLjKgQk-zgsBWZFfH-cnHVhPj5G-YISlYJtp5T73mRdJSETv0q-uX7KPYQeGRHktsbFApU67UABC2MecrKl0qNlxsys8V9NWDkC0SvW_kj2FufGt7AU/s1600/IMG_20180815_141756805.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiszcK-Q9KKlF5MfOc3V-0HGqI0iLjKgQk-zgsBWZFfH-cnHVhPj5G-YISlYJtp5T73mRdJSETv0q-uX7KPYQeGRHktsbFApU67UABC2MecrKl0qNlxsys8V9NWDkC0SvW_kj2FufGt7AU/s640/IMG_20180815_141756805.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Its a brighter look and I really enjoyed picking out those colours. I began with the white with circles that have orange, purple, turquoise in it and initially included a soft palette of those colours in one fabric too - but had to discard that as it didn't really fit once I had everything else. Again, strange how that can happen when you expect a fabric that has all the right colours in it, to complement others and yet it just doesn't fit. No matter, I'm sure its time to shine will come.<br />
<br />
I really enjoyed doing the floppy feathers so tried that again with this baby quilt.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7i8WTKWwEn98Ec5eVoon0Kl88khrkP72KQn9EKR9LVAnTYSF_8rnx9UvXCpFXhstpmwOfi-Cs0yUBryoLE-Tx2A8ocasQCr973MTU-vSLdSZ1J5ClfQSZg8yokDAci9V8oCONFBHIPl8/s1600/IMG_20180815_141852057.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7i8WTKWwEn98Ec5eVoon0Kl88khrkP72KQn9EKR9LVAnTYSF_8rnx9UvXCpFXhstpmwOfi-Cs0yUBryoLE-Tx2A8ocasQCr973MTU-vSLdSZ1J5ClfQSZg8yokDAci9V8oCONFBHIPl8/s640/IMG_20180815_141852057.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The purple fabric (given to me by a friend quite some time ago) seemed to be a good one to create the border with, but wouldn't you know it, wasn't quite enough. So I find that's where the creativity/ingenuity has to come in. I stretched it a little by putting some plain purple in as well. And the eye doesn't really notice it, seems we do focus on the whole. But here it is:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghJ8N5QpEOQZ7gcVay8vcZiR7AKcAcY9F6dLg994Y8TtHFIHtGN2MIjUogCPEWaglJGtUAiBr8KZhyphenhyphencPf9dY5ZXCsp1RCL3RbOL3dNEkMiX2Zxl-dWSKu0l9m4KPbonpbexm69y7YA9ZA/s1600/IMG_20180815_141957328.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghJ8N5QpEOQZ7gcVay8vcZiR7AKcAcY9F6dLg994Y8TtHFIHtGN2MIjUogCPEWaglJGtUAiBr8KZhyphenhyphencPf9dY5ZXCsp1RCL3RbOL3dNEkMiX2Zxl-dWSKu0l9m4KPbonpbexm69y7YA9ZA/s640/IMG_20180815_141957328.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the backing - also in my stash, just seems to work really well:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVTyDYhp7aJsmHt1plaMwygdwMoLi4Jj7hFqfx26b3UIJRg4djBPDTe9HbI1JXH8nsmVmD9rid2-nAn5CIA-4b4RhzB8hEeaAHLF4b7il2FLkMSgONjIroE4eZVkAMKnXLnpjWlbRX6Dk/s1600/IMG_20180815_141929175.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVTyDYhp7aJsmHt1plaMwygdwMoLi4Jj7hFqfx26b3UIJRg4djBPDTe9HbI1JXH8nsmVmD9rid2-nAn5CIA-4b4RhzB8hEeaAHLF4b7il2FLkMSgONjIroE4eZVkAMKnXLnpjWlbRX6Dk/s640/IMG_20180815_141929175.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The orange binding seems to work too, I really like it when I have everything on hand and have fun putting it all together. And baby quilts seem to come together in no time, I think it's my favourite size to quilt. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One final shot of the whole and then it goes along with the others made earlier, to new babies and their parents. That's the other wonderful thing about making quilts, getting to give them as gifts. Such fun. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0TzQit_EwCmUQ5vCebB06UFtY3wtWM9iJiAlTTNFZ-syKPLriZOFJgbjsVDubCFLpyKAmph3adJnWgu0RBTfiy9L5BML8MRqqJZqZnF_t3DnC5llIRJE7ASsJUbc7KnAs4ficvy9m2L8/s1600/IMG_20180815_141841134.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0TzQit_EwCmUQ5vCebB06UFtY3wtWM9iJiAlTTNFZ-syKPLriZOFJgbjsVDubCFLpyKAmph3adJnWgu0RBTfiy9L5BML8MRqqJZqZnF_t3DnC5llIRJE7ASsJUbc7KnAs4ficvy9m2L8/s640/IMG_20180815_141841134.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>

A friend of mine bought a panel of birds - beautiful watercolour birds. And since her other half is a twitcher, and the illustrations were indistinct in terms of being a particular bird and perhaps not being rendered completely accurate - (which can frustrate bird watchers I guess) she thought this was a good option.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRoWZ2F7KSW9L7peRnAGxBKxM8voEBqi3qNj0BnpDTZxbmPOHLmgVCBB34oP5trbX9bqrlGcnfeaH2BBkt0Nc8SIWLTyt-_E9w9DiqEgypRzgjWmaYo2ckQ4_-z2-apdMU0zGXBk5gmvI/s1600/IMG_20180807_104506182.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRoWZ2F7KSW9L7peRnAGxBKxM8voEBqi3qNj0BnpDTZxbmPOHLmgVCBB34oP5trbX9bqrlGcnfeaH2BBkt0Nc8SIWLTyt-_E9w9DiqEgypRzgjWmaYo2ckQ4_-z2-apdMU0zGXBk5gmvI/s640/IMG_20180807_104506182.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My friend, however, was not confident to quilt the panels, having put all the borders on. So I volunteered, since I really do enjoy free-motion quilting. So I set about stippling around the birds, not outlining them as we wanted them to stay kind of free-form. Aren't they cute?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisOcoKzj-GtGvnjxpvsNVrhzOtWgpkzjNapt3pWr-CM5gvxHf6216FArf98jaSQBokGNNxZqHZizUndGskhv_geMTtOa75pWcDwxVPvaB9doolk7UfB_0B7iRKH4lSybPOscIR5YgiyQM/s1600/IMG_20180807_104523445.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisOcoKzj-GtGvnjxpvsNVrhzOtWgpkzjNapt3pWr-CM5gvxHf6216FArf98jaSQBokGNNxZqHZizUndGskhv_geMTtOa75pWcDwxVPvaB9doolk7UfB_0B7iRKH4lSybPOscIR5YgiyQM/s640/IMG_20180807_104523445.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The artist is Connie Hayley and I love her colours and style. Having done the stippling, I did a stitch in the ditch around the first small white border, but on the second white one I thought I'd give some leaves a bit of a try. I'd done them on a placemat previously, and thought they might fit in this border. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL3gISQl7S2e8whaDv9GTSQ4ESAsqCEJ1_zeHuAsvq32SMZg3IOSy-Wd_PlvHradEKmOlloMTpGo8xT38aM0Xcm8bB6eUCTn-Xm227byREyb0VM2Jlw39iR_DDY8y20qg9Dyam2SvJAl4/s1600/IMG_20180807_104535438.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL3gISQl7S2e8whaDv9GTSQ4ESAsqCEJ1_zeHuAsvq32SMZg3IOSy-Wd_PlvHradEKmOlloMTpGo8xT38aM0Xcm8bB6eUCTn-Xm227byREyb0VM2Jlw39iR_DDY8y20qg9Dyam2SvJAl4/s640/IMG_20180807_104535438.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They seemed to work well, so consulting my friend, asked whether she might also like some in the green border - she thought that might work too, so there they are. I think the binding will be a dark shade like the central framing of the birds, either that or a green, we'll see what works best. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For the backing, a lovely beige/light brown grunge type fabric works well. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipzeqcDTXDyV_fG3vioaeH6D5jM3IbMWNyh0-aY2WoY390DX0dxEgTNfBwk_mmlsW3PngCwZLlXVDTE4DiuvMGKC32KfKPsAnxbZf0RNHNrtCt28FaK-p6bXDh81OzAGiR9Sw3WnLFI_Q/s1600/IMG_20180807_104548262.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipzeqcDTXDyV_fG3vioaeH6D5jM3IbMWNyh0-aY2WoY390DX0dxEgTNfBwk_mmlsW3PngCwZLlXVDTE4DiuvMGKC32KfKPsAnxbZf0RNHNrtCt28FaK-p6bXDh81OzAGiR9Sw3WnLFI_Q/s640/IMG_20180807_104548262.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You can also see I did a very large loose stipple around the border with birds in it - they wanted to fly freely! I really enjoyed doing this and my friend is delighted with it, which always helps!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One final photo of one of the birds, they really are lovely. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCPUZPUIG-A2ehO2BH6734sIonzbZCwgzth7BtYMoU_yklGhimQEdhtr5uzGludKwNba0XX0iAyzenH57kqlLLNENXKJeSkWHwR0_xr36XgDe744xAdMTzitaZRNkRWkKcHwARi7sblw4/s1600/IMG_20180805_112908039.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCPUZPUIG-A2ehO2BH6734sIonzbZCwgzth7BtYMoU_yklGhimQEdhtr5uzGludKwNba0XX0iAyzenH57kqlLLNENXKJeSkWHwR0_xr36XgDe744xAdMTzitaZRNkRWkKcHwARi7sblw4/s640/IMG_20180805_112908039.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So that's what I've been working on this week. </div>

Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802006440070002510noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4697161575740658362.post-64973190878350929562018-08-03T17:37:00.003+08:002018-08-03T17:37:44.348+08:00Harlequin finishI wonder if anyone else can relate to the experience of gathering fabric, admiring it, seeing all the pretty colours and then also seeing a great pattern where you could use those pretty colours all together? Well, that was my joy when I first saw 'Postcards from Sweden'.<br />
<br />
To me it had a harlequin flavour, you know the jester type people who dressed up in multi-coloured solids, wore a pointy hat with a bell on the end? Well, maybe my mind just works in weird ways!<br />
<br />
But when I saw that Sandra from <a href="http://www.mmmquilts.com/2018/01/postcard-from-sweden-quilt-along.html">MMM quilts</a> had a quilt along with the pattern back in April, I thought I could join in. I managed to cut things out, but the deadline for completing kind of came and went and I thought perhaps I was one of the last, OK the very last, to finish mine. But maybe not?<br />
<br />
Here it is, just a small size:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTfXI7i3H0RMSVrNl6K847nsP5TE5CcKi8LFyKwLVZBuO9xtrOMpTKx_l6igEAXX-go9Z-U-q8PNdYtvp32h2rWsaWhLlc8Md_4AX8fHHik6PJRW8tujhfSscqnbk279ElZLr7Roq51wg/s1600/IMG_20180803_170128469.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="592" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTfXI7i3H0RMSVrNl6K847nsP5TE5CcKi8LFyKwLVZBuO9xtrOMpTKx_l6igEAXX-go9Z-U-q8PNdYtvp32h2rWsaWhLlc8Md_4AX8fHHik6PJRW8tujhfSscqnbk279ElZLr7Roq51wg/s640/IMG_20180803_170128469.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I didn't adhere strictly to the pattern, but added some of the fabrics I had. This seems to be a very versatile pattern that doesn't seem to care what colours are put together, they seem to work. And yes, the very observant will notice, that the binding isn't quite completed, but that's tonight's task. And it makes me happy.<br />
<br />
I saw that Louise from <a href="http://myquiltodyssey.blogspot.com/2018/04/postcards-from-ikea-finish.html">Quilt Odyssey</a> had quilted hers in straight lines (I should have read more carefully I think hers were and inch apart, not the width of the quilting foot!) I thought that looked great.<br />
So I set to with bright orange thread and it worked very merrily.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4-UVX2e8-Tk4WTK1hW4XxwBWNjRHzghRXWnpo8GK68gGX_cNKM_EPNmr9Nvy5uyQEa6OBvhL1ipUAmmUHTpyP3I_HC_DSDRw_YlNu9lYGd1206zfl4QkdiG0OepRtuyOwid7ZUsAhj5M/s1600/IMG_20180803_170139187.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4-UVX2e8-Tk4WTK1hW4XxwBWNjRHzghRXWnpo8GK68gGX_cNKM_EPNmr9Nvy5uyQEa6OBvhL1ipUAmmUHTpyP3I_HC_DSDRw_YlNu9lYGd1206zfl4QkdiG0OepRtuyOwid7ZUsAhj5M/s640/IMG_20180803_170139187.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
The backing fabric is lovely and bright too, but I really don't want to quilt another straight line for a while:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_QoPwwEyliJFROXNQVZA6_68TpO-w4yRNxQdeIFZ5DhuBFA7xCO6sglnpIKrNG7198q8z00FuKOQCusaZ5-sTneMKMeHvpS-sCRT6YXZJBT1fxyxbvCFXBQh3vcyCtStNwUSxUxIinII/s1600/IMG_20180803_170247711.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_QoPwwEyliJFROXNQVZA6_68TpO-w4yRNxQdeIFZ5DhuBFA7xCO6sglnpIKrNG7198q8z00FuKOQCusaZ5-sTneMKMeHvpS-sCRT6YXZJBT1fxyxbvCFXBQh3vcyCtStNwUSxUxIinII/s640/IMG_20180803_170247711.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
So to have a complete change, I thought I'd do a very simple pattern of bricks, but this is more so that I can practice some more free-motion spineless feathers, or perhaps floppy feathers sounds more complementary?:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju1kJ8jNVUklezmo3Jf6p1btJpoRLpdi084xJPnbieqX8e1ShRKu-Tc0KfiFH9POXWuqVvVLRGtZyS67L_XhVal1AnNcKawtpQjc0Kak-N-JrPehs8AvWN1yq5SQhlUuDizVo8TebSqsI/s1600/IMG_20180803_170328964.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju1kJ8jNVUklezmo3Jf6p1btJpoRLpdi084xJPnbieqX8e1ShRKu-Tc0KfiFH9POXWuqVvVLRGtZyS67L_XhVal1AnNcKawtpQjc0Kak-N-JrPehs8AvWN1yq5SQhlUuDizVo8TebSqsI/s640/IMG_20180803_170328964.jpg" width="556" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Whichever way they go, I had great fun doing them over this small quilt and it seemed to unify the whole and bring an added dimension to it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDKXPvYH54PcuN-haIs8WIvz315HOzv9pA-ssElzVWuPQEmH_2SA4Bk5iAATA331u_rcjuU4s0ziRdTek6CYTMmMPMcCaLLBluxVrwtC9p-b2V2YRr3-I8c5Ww6_-5uxlWEH5Cg17L0Qs/s1600/IMG_20180803_170352347.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDKXPvYH54PcuN-haIs8WIvz315HOzv9pA-ssElzVWuPQEmH_2SA4Bk5iAATA331u_rcjuU4s0ziRdTek6CYTMmMPMcCaLLBluxVrwtC9p-b2V2YRr3-I8c5Ww6_-5uxlWEH5Cg17L0Qs/s640/IMG_20180803_170352347.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I did them diagonally on the quilt, to direct the eye towards the diagonal rows created by the colour of the bricks. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Again the backing fabric shows them off really well:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_6fQeMtc0InQb9KSLGhHMFOfpk9S764M2gFus2Sc8-tGoL_8Jqt3iHeddXYaUFcBhJuwx2A3MbjCRj76tJzFIEK4M9nbuNgiYwj01JnvEG1bBUPmlPYwUEluFyoH-ZvoXkCof-JehqYc/s1600/IMG_20180803_170415020.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_6fQeMtc0InQb9KSLGhHMFOfpk9S764M2gFus2Sc8-tGoL_8Jqt3iHeddXYaUFcBhJuwx2A3MbjCRj76tJzFIEK4M9nbuNgiYwj01JnvEG1bBUPmlPYwUEluFyoH-ZvoXkCof-JehqYc/s640/IMG_20180803_170415020.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This will definitely be one of my 'go to' patterns now, a lovely variety to the stipple I often do, or a paisley type leaf pattern. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So that's what I've been up to lately, what about you?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Until next time,</div>

They are very satisfying as they come together quickly and the bright colours always make me smile.<br />
The first is based on some fire engine fabric my mother in law gave me some time ago (in years I'm talking about). They framed up easily and then I was surprised to find that when I put this blue ish fabric near them and it seemed to work really well. It has a small floral, so not something I would have normally chosen, but isn't that the fun of patchwork? Fabrics you don't anticipate playing well together surprise us.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
An overall stipple is also very easy quilting, so that happened quite fast too. And then a stripey border, also always fun. And there is number one. A close up of those engines, very cute. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
For number two, I've had this book for a few years (since 2013) and made several quilts from it, one with stars and one with hearts. It's a great one as it uses 2 and half inch strips for most of the quilt. I knew it had a pattern for Teddy Bears that I'd often thought of making. This was the time. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here they are, Edward and his friends Elvin; Evan and Eli:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzFevo9QX-Pn3DMhN7UgG7Eo18cvQcsQI_hhQzdubCc52iGRboKzxvCmGvG-uKmrXUFJpqceNoCc7KHQYGSLxz5xcjq55YIJ1kUmty5sVE4ZeqSkbmoGhNZDFfnZYnAgS9_NRcst7mhGE/s1600/IMG_20180717_081546379.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzFevo9QX-Pn3DMhN7UgG7Eo18cvQcsQI_hhQzdubCc52iGRboKzxvCmGvG-uKmrXUFJpqceNoCc7KHQYGSLxz5xcjq55YIJ1kUmty5sVE4ZeqSkbmoGhNZDFfnZYnAgS9_NRcst7mhGE/s640/IMG_20180717_081546379.jpg" width="540" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think they're cute and again, fabric all from my stash - a winner for sure! I enjoyed doing these so much and they came together so quickly that I thought I'd incorporate one on the backing. Here he is, Ezra Bear:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEialJJW9Zjs61EcNjbmT3hMsqC3ceBwv6UxMHZEbnpExppyywi3JGLYMjlsXp0s-F7ow1uTEbbiHUbAqxEJpwmfc1t25Owz9Zy99k38m1JUqfNK1K3SMXbxHQNPK67Aef9nf4uyhzSpbgA/s1600/IMG_20180717_081614228.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEialJJW9Zjs61EcNjbmT3hMsqC3ceBwv6UxMHZEbnpExppyywi3JGLYMjlsXp0s-F7ow1uTEbbiHUbAqxEJpwmfc1t25Owz9Zy99k38m1JUqfNK1K3SMXbxHQNPK67Aef9nf4uyhzSpbgA/s640/IMG_20180717_081614228.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
And as a change up from my usual stipple, I thought I'd give this paisley/leaf a bit of a go. It worked quite well too, just on my domestic machine. I used a variegated embroidery shiny thread on the top and Rasant in the bobbin. It's a combination that seems to work well for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I do have a couple more baby quilts in the pipeline and a larger sampler type quilt I'm quilting for a friend, so we'll see how far I get on those this week. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

While technically I am working on my list of six unfinished projects, two of these recently finished items weren't actually on the list.<br />
The first was made for a friend who just had her third grandson born overseas. She had a piece of fabric that she thought just suited an Australian reminder - Blinky Bill, a cute koala. As I couldn't quite bring myself to cut into it, it became the backing to a simple primary colours quilt - making it reversible really.<br />
Here's the 'back':<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE037hls6R6hGLnvHa2oEC5TpTYb3TcTDVj9UUGz7S1LHW5W1BHZAZ-sjzEOgyED5OTyN-_QJ6SJUeR4KZ2Zixaz2dwu2GWLwnljov95yTPZEPzUMsBo4sr9vhR0-jdQektxTi7_RD_sw/s1600/IMG_20180607_122806869.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE037hls6R6hGLnvHa2oEC5TpTYb3TcTDVj9UUGz7S1LHW5W1BHZAZ-sjzEOgyED5OTyN-_QJ6SJUeR4KZ2Zixaz2dwu2GWLwnljov95yTPZEPzUMsBo4sr9vhR0-jdQektxTi7_RD_sw/s640/IMG_20180607_122806869.jpg" width="640" /></a> And then here's the 'front', depending which way they want to use it.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFg9kcIX3OhoCgam1afTZmsQtds2wMQmJjLwONrMzhLeXOfWP7pBcc3codJ4jDnNPDxOd7DfUeahzvw784ZC9YdPQAPlwiXBgm9RTUAKtoXQAdGhmH2Nr7MeI8GjkGkzHg84uwGgmQVmU/s1600/IMG_20180607_122840697.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFg9kcIX3OhoCgam1afTZmsQtds2wMQmJjLwONrMzhLeXOfWP7pBcc3codJ4jDnNPDxOd7DfUeahzvw784ZC9YdPQAPlwiXBgm9RTUAKtoXQAdGhmH2Nr7MeI8GjkGkzHg84uwGgmQVmU/s640/IMG_20180607_122840697.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was very pleased to find the fabric for these blocks in my stash, as well as the binding, which goes well with both sides, a blue and yellow cross hatch. The simple stipple worked well for both sides too so my friend is happy and next month will take the quilt with her when she travels to meet her new grandson. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My second finish was a bit of a 'squirrel', or is that Magpie? I can't seem to get rid of any small scraps of fabric and small squares in particular hold their own appeal. This is the third postage stamp I've made, in variously two or two and half inch squares. I like the alternating pale pairing to let the other fabrics shine. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVz4-wRPkVANSLn9ef5eNFPpsM0laR3uVoDAm7A6W01NWTnXsDEeF0Qjwkvrwugz80LAEC6GsW0SwSVZTLFJaz7fNtpYvLcjduQZ0lNOwVCUH0aKboKVFLSeCkNeBSwsZHtxsQWCkOpv8/s1600/IMG_20180616_151221347.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVz4-wRPkVANSLn9ef5eNFPpsM0laR3uVoDAm7A6W01NWTnXsDEeF0Qjwkvrwugz80LAEC6GsW0SwSVZTLFJaz7fNtpYvLcjduQZ0lNOwVCUH0aKboKVFLSeCkNeBSwsZHtxsQWCkOpv8/s640/IMG_20180616_151221347.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I must have had this folded badly as you can see that crease across the centre. I know that the best place to 'store' a quilt is on a bed, but we only have so many beds in our place before the quilts find a home. This one is likely destined for one of the babies born to our MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) group that I've made several quilts for. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGE_EnidxQbNinQVzQCSXEEc_NCwFcYdIehbcRQM7cJW0DQ9AHxwnQGMK0CP4h8nzSE6Duv0UKVuOtBrr5C3OUTU25rmdXfpLOSK5VyMGuZ4HU6mQc0BilkW8QR75IOw5IQab6ugMpPI/s1600/IMG_20180616_151236392.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGE_EnidxQbNinQVzQCSXEEc_NCwFcYdIehbcRQM7cJW0DQ9AHxwnQGMK0CP4h8nzSE6Duv0UKVuOtBrr5C3OUTU25rmdXfpLOSK5VyMGuZ4HU6mQc0BilkW8QR75IOw5IQab6ugMpPI/s640/IMG_20180616_151236392.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The backing is a sweet white with small coloured flowers. I went for a simple cross hatch with this one and then the swirls in the white areas- it always reminds me of a musical treble clef for some reason. That pink and white candy striped binding is becoming a bit of a favourite for me. One final close up of some of the cute fabrics - they make me smile recalling other quilts made along the way. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8Iv38xIAvwt5Pq8BqfUsG9OqlIrQL1rE7pV4Qhjc2ugyP9Vre7iiThhaz0pdb92qZRUqZE1nZNXWOwQTVEhROO0qLj5rT0w4HqvKRMYTQo14WldUSI3U_fBRdSFraBJPLddibMXXvIKg/s1600/IMG_20180616_151253277.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8Iv38xIAvwt5Pq8BqfUsG9OqlIrQL1rE7pV4Qhjc2ugyP9Vre7iiThhaz0pdb92qZRUqZE1nZNXWOwQTVEhROO0qLj5rT0w4HqvKRMYTQo14WldUSI3U_fBRdSFraBJPLddibMXXvIKg/s640/IMG_20180616_151253277.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So that brings me to number three. I can't recall just when I started this or really why it stalled along the way, but it was number one in my list of six. I had done quite a bit of the quilting last year or the year before and realised it was just a matter of a few hours and I'd be done. Anyway, finally here it is:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdfFySMmIG1f84cdVpMt-qlGHVMnEy4y72AYYZYWHMPm5rNbMLMyfwQl2_o55v8ZbsBEe0xSWoHTRPqxOR9w4cfaXjUnER8LrOesz2NvQsZ_4c1DyvxPN3SyGjHQVIu4dZV1qM6M_HwKs/s1600/IMG_20180616_151339241.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="454" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdfFySMmIG1f84cdVpMt-qlGHVMnEy4y72AYYZYWHMPm5rNbMLMyfwQl2_o55v8ZbsBEe0xSWoHTRPqxOR9w4cfaXjUnER8LrOesz2NvQsZ_4c1DyvxPN3SyGjHQVIu4dZV1qM6M_HwKs/s640/IMG_20180616_151339241.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I recall making the star block so that I could figure out some dimensions for a friend in our craft class who wanted to make a quilt with a reasonably large block. I'm sure she gave her quilt away a couple of years ago, and while this flimsy came together quite quickly, I mulled over the quilting for a while. I free motioned in the cream areas and then finally decided to just shadow or outline the beige coloured squares and triangles. I think that's when I stalled. Going round in a square (if that's not a contradiction) was not the most interesting thing to do!! Sometimes you just need to get on and do it. So over about a week in short bursts I finally got there. A close up of some of the quilting, not flashy show level, but eyeballing and going for it can be fun. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia4aLBPPRTCjGgZrNPRXZRHT-2sZfax5Lil0-tlcLINWp4v7H5zODTK8cbA08Bs6J_Xr_oTvDZdj8Yf4HbKrt9cCMlLkmKVcGaZNkzz-errhV2m40WKmPOwmQO69_4ZhAv-Wp-owBy__I/s1600/IMG_20180616_151352430.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia4aLBPPRTCjGgZrNPRXZRHT-2sZfax5Lil0-tlcLINWp4v7H5zODTK8cbA08Bs6J_Xr_oTvDZdj8Yf4HbKrt9cCMlLkmKVcGaZNkzz-errhV2m40WKmPOwmQO69_4ZhAv-Wp-owBy__I/s640/IMG_20180616_151352430.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The backing I was really pleased to find, a navy with some little splashes of sparkle. It seems to fit quite well. This photo may make it look like its not sitting flat, but it is truly. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS_1hBeKAABF7Vibe28bmfVbGIyXlfOi80PKhIpo1leI2mTZWSvEoZ_oWR_OLQoLAZY4kecbkQDJ4mzV0WmfUmpgwk7T70Y1Cjvh47xKI0TKfnzNkuTiHgwmCI2La44wJFHfT9_3rO2y8/s1600/IMG_20180616_151405957.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS_1hBeKAABF7Vibe28bmfVbGIyXlfOi80PKhIpo1leI2mTZWSvEoZ_oWR_OLQoLAZY4kecbkQDJ4mzV0WmfUmpgwk7T70Y1Cjvh47xKI0TKfnzNkuTiHgwmCI2La44wJFHfT9_3rO2y8/s640/IMG_20180616_151405957.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So number one on my list, that leaves five! One is so very nearly finished just some more quilting to do (where have I heard that before?). So we'll see what progress I make this week. As long as I don't get distracted with anything new - my very supportive other half is very good at keeping me on track ('Have you finished that other one yet? You can't anything else until that one's done really can you?'). Hmm. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Until next time,</div>

I don't have a photo of the couple, but here's the setting:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJN680aIQAHd4c7_QbpjjniNhecGEty3OodiO128klKSAOh2WXuAnv3ODioPcj2VyT-aZpikpkm7q-SH9x_Ng-61ufmjkMNsOBW0Tlflob5cleupiQZCgwasXOiuEqnNznYdyuH3mfjx8/s1600/IMG_20180421_135141587.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJN680aIQAHd4c7_QbpjjniNhecGEty3OodiO128klKSAOh2WXuAnv3ODioPcj2VyT-aZpikpkm7q-SH9x_Ng-61ufmjkMNsOBW0Tlflob5cleupiQZCgwasXOiuEqnNznYdyuH3mfjx8/s320/IMG_20180421_135141587.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were fortunate enough to have a day like this too, the wind (often present down here) dropped, the sun shone and it was glorious. I asked guests to sign a square of calico fabric, with the intent of making a signature quilt. They were very obliging and with the bride's suggestion of using the bridal party colours (pink and grey), I set about searching my stash for appropriate fabrics. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
People wrote wonderful sentiments, including this one: ["May your love, like this quilt always keep each other warm"]</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhanNdTsSn_sbByM3WylvL81dKdwKcYhv9QKP9LDcILzziwUIsHbn5tSuOceZIQEACo_5ehCGJWzvlF_1xLC7fhJV7OvlURdVDibIPbNpE7Xps9pREzmPRC3coD9ZU1OTPaKhNvkr0EVoI/s1600/IMG_20180424_113935427.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhanNdTsSn_sbByM3WylvL81dKdwKcYhv9QKP9LDcILzziwUIsHbn5tSuOceZIQEACo_5ehCGJWzvlF_1xLC7fhJV7OvlURdVDibIPbNpE7Xps9pREzmPRC3coD9ZU1OTPaKhNvkr0EVoI/s400/IMG_20180424_113935427.jpg" width="350" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the cut off half square triangles to go around the edge. I was improvising the pattern as I went along, needing to add some coloured squares to supplement the signatures to extend the size of the quilt. </div>

It feels good to have this completed (or it will once I get the binding on) on the heels of my <a href="http://www.mypurplepatch.com/2018/04/books-galore.html">Bookcase quilt</a>. Hope you've been having fun with your quilts too. </div>
